New 18+ Dating Floor
Apple is tightening App Store age-rating rules by requiring developers to declare whether their apps include dating or romantic-companion features and by assigning a minimum 18+ rating to apps that answer yes to the dating descriptor. Apple’s update to its Developer News blog says the new content-descriptor questions will appear in App Store Connect starting November 16, and it sets a hard deadline of January 12, 2027 for every app in the store to have both declarations on file.
Apple’s questionnaire will ask whether an app enables dating "between real people and/or a virtual companion that engages a user in sexual or romantic content," and it will also ask whether an app shares a user’s real-world location with another person or a group. Apple’s rules also state that apps with the dating descriptor will be hidden from users under 18 on devices where a parent or guardian has turned on content restrictions, and younger users who can still see the app must prove they are adults before they can buy or download it.
Location Rules Vary
Apple’s new descriptors split the policy into two tracks, with the dating and relationship question triggering an 18+ minimum while the shared-location question "may not have an impact on an app's minimum rating in some regions." Apple’s guidance highlights Brazil as the notable exception, where local rules require an A16 rating for apps that share location and an A18 rating for dating and relationship apps.
Apple’s notice also says developers who believe their apps qualify for a lower official rating, such as tools built for parents and children to share locations, can petition Brazil's Ministry of Justice and Public Security. Apple’s policy framework requires developers to answer both questions whenever they submit a new app or push an update, and it applies the same declaration requirement to changes to an app’s age-rating questionnaire.
AI Companions and Compliance
Apple’s dating descriptor explicitly covers virtual companions, and it defines the feature as dating "between real people and/or a virtual companion that engages a user in sexual or romantic content," which brings AI companion apps into the same 18+ floor. TechCrunch frames the change as a policy that will require all apps offering dating or romantic relationship features to carry an 18+ rating, and it links the update to Apple’s broader effort to better protect minors.
TechCrunch also points to AI companion apps such as Character.AI and Replika, and it notes that xAI launched 3D animated AI companions that allowed users to unlock NSFW capabilities. Apple’s approach also extends the compliance burden to the App Store listing process, because developers must complete the new declarations in App Store Connect starting November 16 and finish them for all apps by January 12, 2027.
