M6 Mac mini, same shell
Apple’s M6 Mac mini keeps the same 5 by 5 inches footprint as the prior model, while reviewers describe it as a compact desktop that stays easy to place behind a monitor or under a desk. The redesign shrank the Mac mini to “just 5 by 5 inches” in 2024, and the M6 model “looks identical to its predecessor” from the outside. Ars Technica says the new Mac mini is “the same design as before but with new guts,” and it frames the update as technically incremental even as it highlights a major pricing shift.
Ars Technica adds that the new Mac mini starts at $899 for a version with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, which it calls a $300 increase over the $599 M4 Mac mini in 2024. The Verge similarly ties the M6’s value to the price jump, saying the new model starts at $899 after the M4 started at $599.
2nm chip and port changes
Apple’s M6 chip is built on a 2nm process, and 9to5Mac says it is “Apple’s first 2nm processor for the Mac.” The M6 uses “all three of its CPU core types: 2 super cores, 4 performance cores, and 6 efficiency cores,” and it lists a review-unit configuration of a 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU, 24GB unified memory, and 512GB storage. CNET says the M6 update “arrived not a moment too soon,” and it describes the M6 as a compact, quiet machine for running local AI agents around the clock.
Macworld says the M6 is the first Mac to be released using the next-generation 2-nanometer M6 chip, and it notes that the starting price has been boosted to $899. MTom’s Guide emphasizes that the M6 keeps the same compact design and port layout while upgrading connectivity, and it says the Mac mini with M6 starts at $899 and the M5 Pro starts at $1,699.
AI performance, but higher cost
Apple’s M6 includes a Neural Accelerator on each GPU core and delivers “up to 4x faster AI performance than the M4 Mac mini.” 9to5Mac also cites Geekbench 7 results for the M6 Mac mini, saying it scored 4,074 in single-core and 22,632 in multi-core. Ars Technica argues that the 2026 memory crunch has upended the usual upgrade value, and it calls the M6 “only one of those things” because the price hike undercuts the value of the technological improvements.
Six Colors frames the price as crossing an “invisible threshold,” saying the starting price has been boosted to $899, a 50% increase over the relatively recent base price. TechEBlog says the M6 model reaches store shelves with “new 2nm Speed in the Same Tiny Box and a Higher Asking Price,” and it reiterates that the M6 starts at $899, a $300 increase over the M4’s original MSRP for comparable memory and storage.
