Meta buys Conductor
Meta acquired Conductor, an AI coding startup whose platform lets software engineers run multiple AI coding agents in parallel in isolated copies of a codebase. Conductor was founded in 2024 and is led by chief executive Charlie Holtz and chief technology officer Jackson de Campos, and the deal terms were not disclosed.
Conductor’s platform lets engineers run several coding agents at once, then review, open pull requests for, and merge their work, with developers using their own subscriptions and keys. Charlie Holtz wrote, "I have big news: Conductor is joining Meta," and he added, "We have some big, crazy plans for the next interface."
Agent orchestration contest
Meta’s acquisition places it in a contest among AI companies to build the tools developers use to create and manage software, and the same day OpenAI told Axios it plans to acquire Pierre Computer. OpenAI announced plans in June to acquire Ona, a startup focused on cloud-based coding environments and agent orchestration, and the Conductor deal targets the coordination layer above coding models.
Conductor’s platform focuses on orchestration, instead of merely offering an assistant that generates code, and it lets developers assign tasks, watch progress, and judge results. An independent researcher told Axios that excelling at coding, programming and math is necessary for companies to improve their AI models, linking software development with the race to advance AI capabilities.
Conductor Cloud shutdown
Conductor’s product is winding down in stages, with new sign-ups and downloads stopping on November 4 and Pro subscribers getting their paid features free. Conductor Cloud workspaces become read-only on November 13, and Conductor Cloud shuts down on November 20 after which the company begins deleting user cloud data.
Conductor’s desktop app keeps working until early 2027, when the team expects to release a new interface it has not yet described. Charlie Holtz said Conductor’s team will work with Nat Friedman and Alexandr Wang at Meta Superintelligence Labs, and he framed the move as building "the next interface" for AI coding.
