Airport arrest in Brazil
Brazil’s federal police detained a Spanish citizen at São Paulo’s international Guarulhos airport for racism on Wednesday, after a LATAM airlines flight arriving from the northeastern city of São Luis called police when the woman disembarked.

Police said the arrest followed “allegedly made racially abusive remarks directed at the workers who unload the aircraft’s baggage,” and the airline said there was “no justification for the aggression directed at its employees.”
The same legal framework is repeatedly cited in coverage of Brazil’s anti-racism enforcement, with penalties described as “imprisonment from two to five years and a fine.”
The detention was presented as part of “a series of high-profile arrests of foreign tourists on similar grounds,” and the legal proceedings were described as still ongoing.
Pattern of high-profile cases
Coverage tied the Guarulhos arrest to earlier high-profile cases, including the January arrest of Argentine citizen Agostina Páez in Rio after she was filmed mimicking a monkey toward a waiter at a nightclub.
The Independent and The Guardian both said Páez was initially barred from leaving Brazil and later returned to Argentina in April, where images showed her meeting with Sen. Patricia Bullrich, described as “a close ally of Argentina’s President, Javier Milei.”
The Guardian also reported that police arrested another Argentinian, Eduardo Ignacio Murias, in Minas Gerais in May after he allegedly photographed and filmed a young child without authorization and shared the images with racist messages in Spanish.
In that same broader sweep, The Guardian said police arrested a Chilean citizen in May for racial and homophobic slurs against crew members of a flight between Guarulhos and Frankfurt, according to a 15 May statement.
Legal tools and penalties
Brazil’s anti-racism enforcement is described as backed by strict penalties and constitutional protections, with one account saying insulting a person on the basis of race carries “a penalty of imprisonment from 2 to 5 years and a fine.”

The Independent quoted Irapuã Santana saying, “Social movements played a very important role in ensuring that the Black population was recognized in the 1988 constitution,” which outlaws racism.
That same account said Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva sanctioned a law in January 2023 that equated racial insults to the crime of racism, strengthening judicial tools for combating racism.
In the Guarulhos case, the Spanish citizen’s detention was framed as the latest application of those tools, after police acted on the LATAM flight crew’s call and the airline condemned the alleged remarks directed at baggage workers.
