Five Days in Goiás
Brazilian military police found Emiliane Tamara Nunes Carvalho, a 24-year-old woman, after she was missing for five days and was discovered bound and gagged inside a residence in the state of Goiás.

The rescue operation took place on Friday, August 21, in the Jardim América III area of Águas Lindas de Goiás, after officers broke down the door and entered a room where she was lying down with her arms and legs immobilized.
Police said she had trouble breathing and showed signs of oxygen deprivation, and she was immediately transported to the Municipal Hospital of Aguas Lindas de Goiás.
Her family had reported her missing at the start of the week, and the Military Police said she was held against her will by her ex-husband, identified as Ailton Rodrigues.
In a statement shared through her social networks, Nunes Carvalho said, “I am completely crushed inside,” describing what she alleged her ex-husband did during captivity.
Arrest and Alleged Motive
After the rescue, police seized a nine-millimeter pistol at the residence and began searching for the suspect identified as Ailton Rodrigues.
Univision reported that Rodrigues was located later that Friday in the Jardín Querência area while driving a vehicle, and authorities said he disobeyed the stop order and fled, triggering a chase that ended in his arrest.
The Goiás Military Police said the detainee confessed to drugging his ex-girlfriend with antidepressants and admitted taking her to the place where she was found.
El Tiempo said the Civil Police reported that the man acknowledged supplying medications to the young woman before moving her to the property, while authorities kept the investigation open to establish the facts.
In the rescue footage described by 24horas, Nunes Carvalho accused her ex-husband of putting “rags with acid inside me,” and she said, “This is only the beginning” as she demanded justice.
Charges and Calls for Justice
Authorities said Rodrigues would face charges tied to the captivity and assault, with Univision listing kidnapping, rape, illegal detention, and illegal possession of a firearm.

El Tiempo reported that the suspect remained detained in flagrante while authorities clarified the circumstances of how Emiliane was taken to the residence and stayed there for several days.
The case was framed as part of investigations related to violence against women allegedly committed by ex-partners in Brazil, as El Tiempo noted that inquiries continued to reconstruct what happened during the five days Emiliane remained missing.
Al-Jazirah Net described the rescue as the moment officers found the woman handcuffed by her wrists, tied with cords, and chained with her mouth covered, and it said police arrested her former partner on Friday, August 21.
One activist reaction quoted by Al-Jazirah Net called for extreme punishment, saying, “In cases like this, the punishment should be the death penalty, seriously.”
