Claims spread fast

CAM’s Antisemitism Research Center (ARC) identified 2,963 posts on X within a 12-hour monitoring period that attributed the September 30 attempted hijacking of an Israel-bound FlyDubai flight to Israel, Mossad, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Zionists or Jews. ARC Research Associate Oliver Marks said, "67 minutes is all it took for the near downing of a commercial airliner by a terrorist pilot to become fodder for antisemitic conspiracy theorists across the globe." ARC said nearly 3,000 posts blamed Israel or Jews, and it reported that antisemitic claims accounted for more than four in five monitored “false flag” posts in the final hours.

ARC said approximately 72% of the 4,136 collected posts containing the phrase “false flag” promoted the identified conspiracy claims, and it reported that the proportion reached 81% and 82% in the final two hourly monitoring windows. ARC’s concluding assessment said, "The pattern mirrors the influence operations that hostile states, Russia foremost among them, use to destabilize Western societies."

Fact-checking the evidence

CAM research on X also described how a post by Jackson Hinkle portrayed the incident as a staged operation and drew more than 2.4 million views.

The UAE attorney general said the co-pilot attempted to carry out a “terrorist act,” attacked the captain with an emergency axe and tried to seize control of the aircraft, and the investigation into motive and possible connections is continuing.

The fact-checking account said the airline at first confirmed only that an “incident” had occurred during the flight and that the aircraft had landed safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, before later confirming a confrontation in the cockpit.

The fact-checking account said Netanyahu warned Israel had “indications” its enemies might try to attack it ahead of the Oct. 27 election, and it said no evidence published so far linked that warning to the Flydubai flight.

The fact-checking account said passenger oxygen masks are not triggered simply because the aircraft itself falls below a certain altitude, and it quoted the oxygen system activation threshold as when the “cabin altitude” rises above roughly 14,000 feet.

Investigation, threats, and stakes

Emirati authorities described the cockpit assault as an attempt to carry out a "terrorist" attack, and UAE Attorney General Hamad Saif Al Shamsi said the co-pilot used the emergency axe inside the cockpit to attack the pilot. AFP reported that Netanyahu warned that any party found to have involvement in the attack that struck the aircraft’s tail will pay a “heavy price,” and it said Netanyahu told viewers, "We are investigating whether he was sent, and the person who sent him will pay a very heavy price." AFP said the aircraft tail belonged to flight “FZ1073” from Dubai to Tel Aviv, with 172 passengers including 166 Israelis, in addition to crew members.

“We are investigating whether he was sent, and the person who sent him will pay a very heavy price.”

Fly Dubai CEO Ghaith Al-Ghaith said authorities were conducting an official investigation with the company’s support, describing what happened as “an security incident that occurred in the cockpit,” and he said it was important to let the process uncover the facts. The fact-checking research said the implications extend beyond one flight, because when attacks involving Israelis are immediately recast as Jewish conspiracies, the resulting narratives erase victims’ suffering, redirect blame and reinforce longstanding antisemitic tropes.
