Gaza, filmed for three years

Ibrahim Rabaa filmed fragments of his life through Israel’s genocide in Gaza for almost three years, capturing bombardment and repeated displacement. The footage is a personal record of a war that has killed over 73,000 Palestinians. Hamas marked its third anniversary against Israel on October 7, and the attack left an initial death toll of 1,219 and more than 250 civilians taken hostage.

Hamas began launching thousands of rockets at 6:29 a.m. on October 7, 2023, and the attack overwhelmed Israel’s air defense system. The Israeli offensive triggered by the attack reduced a large part of the Gaza Strip to rubble amid strong international protests for what was deemed disproportionate.

Tensions after a new attempt

Israeli society was shaken by fears for its security after a terrorist attempt aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073. The airplane’s pilot, Indian citizen Smit Machchhar, was stabbed by his co-pilot, Haman al Hammani, in mid-flight last September 30 with the intention of crashing the aircraft into Israeli territory with its 174 passengers aboard, mostly Israelis. The government released information linking the attacker to an anti-Israel terrorist ideology, while the most recent data indicated he was a “lone wolf” with no connections to any fundamentalist group.

The opposition accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of neglecting the country’s security, which enabled Hamas’s October 7 attack three years ago. Netanyahu categorically denied a Haaretz investigation’s report that the President of the United Arab Emirates, Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, personally warned Netanyahu ten days before the October 7 attacks and announced he would sue the newspaper for defamation.

Education in Sinai, closures

Palestinian teacher Hadeel Zarab began teaching a small group of children in a rented building in Al-Arish in North Sinai, Egypt. The effort evolved into a free school serving about 400 boys and girls aged 6 to 18, after there were about 150 students in the first year of its founding. Zarab founded the only Palestinian school in the area and said she told the children, "We hope they can realize their dreams".

Israel would impose a general closure on the West Bank and close crossings into the Gaza Strip on Monday and Wednesday in connection with commemorations marking the October 7 massacre. COGAT announced the closure would take effect on October 5 and October 7 and that humanitarian aid will not enter the enclave.
