Deutsche Welle reports Israel's memorial day for the dead of 7 October and says the Hamas attack 'killed' some 1,200 people. For Gaza it says only that Israel's war 'left' more than 73,650 Palestinians dead, though its own earlier report said Israel's attack 'has killed' them. In its own voice DW also calls the assault a war 'targeting Hamas', while its own figures say most of the dead were civilians.

  1. Writes the death out

    Serious

“left more than 73,650 Palestinians dead in Gaza”

    Why this matters
The words 'left ... dead' turn the killing of more than 73,650 Palestinians into an outcome a war produced. No one kills them in this sentence.
    The impression it gives
A reader comes away thinking these deaths simply happened in the course of a war, not that Israeli occupation forces killed them.
    The context
Five sentences earlier DW writes that the Hamas attack 'killed some 1,200 people'. A week before, DW itself wrote that Israel's attack on Gaza 'has killed over 73,000'. Only the Palestinian dead lose the verb and the actor.

    Written straight

Israeli occupation forces have killed more than 73,650 Palestinians in Gaza, most of them civilians, according to Gaza's Health Ministry.

  2. States one side's claim as fact

    Serious

“began a war targeting Hamas in Gaza”

    Why this matters
In its own voice DW says the Israeli military's campaign was 'targeting Hamas'. That is Israel's own description of its aim.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes it as established that Israel's assault was aimed at Hamas.
    The context
DW's own figures two sentences later say most of the more than 73,650 dead were civilians. A UN Commission of Inquiry found that Israel has committed genocide in Gaza. The article never mentions that finding.

    “Israel's war on Hamas”

    Why this matters
The words 'war on Hamas' are the label attached to the death toll itself. A toll made up mostly of civilians becomes the result of a fight against one armed group.
    The impression it gives
A reader believes the 73,650 dead were casualties of a campaign against Hamas.
    The context
The ICJ has issued provisional measures in the genocide case against Israel, and a UN inquiry found genocide. In an earlier article DW called it 'Israel's attack on Gaza', not a war on Hamas.
