Ceasefire, then strikes
Gazans have faced near-daily Israeli strikes even after a ceasefire began, with the BBC citing Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry saying more than 1,400 people in Gaza were killed in Israeli attacks since the start of the ceasefire on 10 October last year. The ceasefire agreement was triggered by the Hamas-led attack on Israel on 7 October 2023, when about 1,200 people were killed and 251 taken hostage. The total death toll from Israeli attacks since the start of the war now stands at more than 74,000, while Israel continued launching strikes in Gaza almost every day.
Al-Jazeera Net said the killing did not stop after the October 10, 2025 ceasefire began to take effect, and it described Israel as having bombarded Gaza non-stop. Al-Jazirah Net added that the toll after three years includes martyrs exceeding 74,000 and injured exceeding 175,000, while it said the Gaza Ministry of Health only counts deaths that reached a hospital or were officially recorded.

Scale of destruction
Unosat, the United Nations satellite center, identified damage to 201,290 structures in the Gaza Strip, equivalent to 82% of all buildings, according to Folha de S.Paulo. 134,422 structures were classified as completely destroyed, while 13,848 suffered severe damage, 28,096 moderate damage, and 24,924 showed possible damage. The analysis was based on images recorded on June 16 of this year, and it estimated that 328,627 residential units were affected.
Al-Jazirah Net said 82% of buildings were damaged or destroyed and stated that 1.98 million Palestinians have been displaced, i.e., 90% of the population, according to OCHA. Al-Jazirah Net also said 93% of the sector’s schools need complete rebuilding, and it reported that more than 700,000 students are deprived of formal education.

What comes next
Israel’s genocidal bombing campaign has devastated Gaza’s wastewater system, destroying or damaging nearly 90% of the territory’s water and sanitation infrastructure since 2023. Every day, 45,000 cubic metres of untreated sewage are discharged into the Mediterranean Sea while an additional 15,000 cubic metres seep into the ground. Al-Jazeera said a UN commission of inquiry concluded that Israel’s assault on Gaza amounts to genocide, while it also described Gaza as left almost uninhabitable amid a wave of destruction.
A proposed approach for rebuilding Gaza included 66 projects worth $2.45 billion in the first phase, ranging from shelter and home repair to health, education, food security, and infrastructure. Full reconstruction of the physical damages across Gaza will cost about $35.2 billion in the medium term, plus another $71.4 billion over the next ten years.
