The Kansas City Chiefs have addressed their backup quarterback needs by acquiring Justin Fields from the New York Jets in exchange for a 2027 sixth-round draft pick, sources confirmed ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The 27-year-old Fields expressed his desire to continue his career in Kansas City, though he had interest from other teams as well.

The Jets are facilitating the trade by paying $7 million of Fields' $10 million guaranteed salary for 2026, with the Chiefs responsible for the remaining $3 million.

This salary arrangement mirrors the Jets' recent trade for Geno Smith where they also covered part of the salary.

The Jets last week acquired quarterback Geno Smith from the Las Vegas Raiders to become their new starter for the 2026 season, creating a surplus at the position.

Justin Fields brings a mobile quarterback skill set to Kansas City where he will take on the responsibility of operating the offense under coach Andy Reid and offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy during the offseason and likely much of training camp.

The 2021 No. 11 overall draft pick completed 62.7% of his throws for 1,259 yards with seven touchdowns and one interception last season.

Fields also contributed 383 yards rushing and four scores on the ground during his time with the Jets.

He had an up-and-down season with the Jets, starting nine games but sitting out Week 3 due to a concussion before being benched in Week 12 in favor of veteran Tyrod Taylor.

His dual-threat capabilities provide a different dimension behind Mahomes compared to the previous backup options.

The trade fills a significant roster hole for the Chiefs, who were left without an experienced veteran backup quarterback after Gardner Minshew signed with the Arizona Cardinals last week.

The other quarterbacks on Kansas City's depth chart, Chris Oladokun and Jake Haener, combined have started just three games in their careers, making Fields' acquisition crucial for team stability.

Head coach Andy Reid has been impressed with Patrick Mahomes' rehabilitation progress from the torn ACL and LCL in his left knee that required surgery in December.

Reid noted that the nine-year veteran spends seven hours daily working with athletic trainer Julie Frymyer to return to the field.

Mahomes has expressed his goal of being ready for the season opener without restrictions.
