Crowd claims challenged
President Donald Trump posted on social media on Thursday that “Everybody stayed right until the end of my Speech because they loved hearing about a truly successful America,” as he kicked off the Great American State Fair in Washington, DC.
“President Donald Trump posted on social media on Thursday about the speech he gave the day prior to kick off the Great American State Fair in Washington, DC: “Everybody stayed right until the end of my Speech because they loved hearing about a truly successful America”
CNN says the claim was false, pointing to a video posted by The Bulwark showing dozens of people streaming out of the event about 17 minutes into the president’s 28-minute address.

CNN senior correspondent Donie O’Sullivan, who was there interviewing attendees, said he observed hundreds of people heading to the exits as Trump’s speech was ongoing.
CNN also cited that some people told O’Sullivan they had come to see the pre-speech flyovers by military jets, while noting that most of the crowd stayed until Trump concluded.
The dispute unfolded as Trump had previously repeated claims during his 2024 presidential campaign that “nobody leaves” his events until he is finished talking, which CNN said weren’t true.
State Fair turnout dispute
The Great American State Fair, a 16-day event that opened Wednesday with remarks from Trump, is part of the nation's yearlong celebration of America's 250th anniversary.
The Independent reported that Trump claimed on Truth Social that his Wednesday speech was “packed to the brim” with 45,000 attendees, while NBC News disputed the estimate and reported the crowd was “nowhere near” that figure.

The Washington Post described the Wednesday crowd as “The crowd thinly covered an area about the length of the National Museum of American History, smaller than some summer outdoor movie screenings.”
PBS reported Trump appeared at an event at the Washington Hilton for the Faith and Freedom Coalition conference, where founder Ralph Reed introduced him and Reed said Trump gave “the most conservative Supreme Court in over a century.”
At the Faith and Freedom Coalition event, Trump told the gathering, “I want to thank Ralph for the introduction,” and he claimed that “religion is back in our country, bigger and stronger than it has been in many, many years.”
Next appearance and stakes
Trump’s crowd-size dispute centered on the Great American State Fair kickoff on the National Mall in Washington, DC, and the event’s next scheduled speech was set for July 4.
“A newly released clip and onsite reporting reveal early departures during a recent Trump speech”
The Independent said Trump is scheduled to return to deliver another speech on July 4, while TheWrap reported that Trump begged rally goers to turn out for that date by saying, “On July 4 we will have the greatest show of all in the National Mall.”
TheWrap also quoted Trump warning that “Because if we have two empty seats, the fake news is going to say we didn’t fill out the arena.”
CNN said the video evidence contradicted Trump’s assertion that “everybody” stayed until he was done, even as it acknowledged that “most of the crowd stayed until Trump concluded.”
CNN added that Trump’s Thursday post revived a pattern from his 2024 campaign, including his claim that “people don’t leave my rallies,” which CNN said was also not correct.
