Hind Rajab found dead

Palestinian girl Hind Rajab, 6, was found murdered in Gaza after she called for help two weeks earlier from inside a car trapped among the bodies of her family members near Israeli tanks in Gaza City. The Palestinian Red Crescent Society said an ambulance and the rescuers’ bodies were found a few meters from the car containing Hind after Israeli tanks and armored vehicles withdrew at dawn from the Tel al-Haoua area, southwest Gaza City.

Hind’s grandfather, Ayyub Hamada, said Hind died and everyone in the car died, while Hind’s mother, Wasam Hamada, said she wants to question officials responsible for Hind’s death “before God, about the day my daughter issued distress calls (...) without anyone rescuing her.” The Red Crescent confirmed it received a phone call from Hind, then heard gunfire, and in a recording she pleaded, “Come... take me,” and “I am very scared, please come.”

PA seeks ICC action

The Palestinian Authority asked the International Criminal Court to investigate the death of Hind Rajab and to “prosecute the Israeli war criminals” it accuses of killing the minor, her family, and the emergency workers who went to rescue her. In a statement, the PA’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said “The execution of Hind Rajab (6 years old), her family, and the crew of the Red Crescent (the ambulance that was transporting the minor) requires the International Criminal Court to take its responsibilities, issue subpoenas and investigation orders against the perpetrators, and prosecute the Israeli war criminals.”

El Mundo reported that the Red Crescent said the ambulance was bombed in the Tal al-Hawa area in Gaza City, causing the deaths of crew members Yusuf Zeino and Ahmed Al Madhoun, who had been missing since Hind Rajab’s rescue mission twelve days ago. El Mundo also said Israeli forces “deliberately targeted the ambulance,” which was found in the Tal al-Hawa neighborhood, south of Gaza City, just meters from the vehicle transporting Hind and from which the Red Crescent received the distress call.

Rescue mission and toll

Multiple outlets described the rescue attempt as failing after coordination, with El Mundo saying the Palestinian Health Ministry confirmed a safe route after rescue was coordinated with the Israeli Army, but “hours later the ambulance never arrived and they could not establish communication with the two medics.” Telecinco said the operator sent an ambulance as soon as possible, but “communication with the vehicle and its two occupants was lost,” and it described Hind as the sole survivor when Hind dialed again.

El Comercio Perú said Hind’s disappearance went viral after a call made by Hind’s 15-year-old cousin Layan Hadama to rescue teams, after they were the sole survivors of an Israeli artillery attack on January 29 against a vehicle in which the rest of the family died. El Espectador added a broader death toll context, saying “More than 11,500 children have died in more than four months of military offensive, which has claimed the lives of nearly 28,000 Gazans,” according to data from Gaza’s Health Ministry controlled by Hamas.
