Midterms reshape power
The United States held midterm legislative elections on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, and the Democratic Party gained control of Congress with majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Democrats won 54 seats in the Senate, surpassing the 51 needed for a majority, and won 237 seats in the House. The Democrats flipped seven states in the Senate, including Iowa, Ohio, South Carolina, North Carolina, Kansas, Texas and Maine.
“The United States held midterm legislative elections this Tuesday (called midterms in English).”
President Trump blamed the GOP’s losses on the fact that he was not on the ballot and said he was willing to work with Democrats. “We’ll, you know, look forward to working with them,” in a phone interview while he watched election results at the White House.
Trump frames defeat
President Donald Trump acknowledged that the midterm results were largely due to the war in Iran, and he insisted, “it was worth it.”
“We had no choice. If we could go back, I would do it again. Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon.”
Trump told reporters he was “absolutely willing” to accept the results of the midterm elections and was prepared to work with Democrats.
“We’ll probably work something out.”
Trump ruled out impeachment, saying, “I don’t think they’ll file it. It would crush them.”
Who wins, what next
The elections involved all 435 members of the House of Representatives and a third of the Senate, and it also included governors in 36 states and hundreds of state and local offices.
The vote tally was still continuing in some states such as Alaska, Nebraska or Mississippi.
The election day was marked by suspicion of fraud and the U.S. Department of Justice deployed 1,000 supervisory officers nationwide to monitor voting in jurisdictions run by Democrats.
Among the night’s main victors were Abdul El-Sayed, James Talarico, Keisha Lance Bottoms, Chris Pappas, and Hakeem Jeffries.
Trump spoke shortly before 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday while he was watching election results at the White House and discussed losses including Senator Darline Graham and Ken Paxton.
