Medvedev dismisses impact
Dmitry Medvedev said Thursday that US midterm results were unlikely to significantly affect Moscow’s interests in the short term, writing on the Russian social media platform Max that “In the short term, I don't think it will have any major impact.” Medvedev argued that Russia remained primarily concerned with “the war in Ukraine and sanctions imposed against Moscow,” and he said Ukraine could hold “some fairly useful consultations” with the Trump administration but “nothing more.”
Medvedev said Trump could shut down the Starshield satellite communications service and halt intelligence sharing with Ukraine, but he argued Trump was unlikely to take such steps because he had little reason to seek further confrontation with Democrats. Medvedev also said Russia should stay focused on its military objectives in Ukraine, adding “crushing the enemy on the battlefield until total victory is achieved.”
Kremlin and Ryabkov posture
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told Yunashev Live that “President Trump remains in power; we sincerely hope he persists in his pacifying efforts,” and he said the results were an internal matter for the United States. Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Riabkov said Democratic control of the legislature does not bode well for bilateral relations, warning that “The activist wing of the Democratic Party’s approach toward Russia is extremely negative.”
Riabkov added that “Our coherent, principled stance on the Ukraine issue is independent of political developments in other countries,” and he said Russia would continue “in accordance with the directives of the President of the Russian Federation.” Prensa Latina reported Riabkov’s position that Russia’s foreign policy “does not depend on the fluctuations of other countries’ political landscapes,” and it quoted him saying “does not depend on the fluctuations of other countries’ political landscapes.”
What changes, what doesn’t
Medvedev said the choice facing Trump on further sanctions would be “extremely difficult,” arguing that additional restrictions could drive up oil prices and anger American motorists. Medvedev said Trump could face difficult political trade-offs as Democrats gained influence in Congress, and he argued that imposing further restrictions on Russia could damage relations with the Kremlin, which he said Trump regarded as a personal diplomatic achievement.
Prensa Latina reported that on November 3, midterm elections were held in the United States, in which 435 members of the House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 senators were elected. Prensa Latina also reported seat totals at 07:00 Moscow time, saying Democrats had 226 seats in the lower chamber and 53 in the Senate, while Republicans had 140 and 42, respectively.
