White House ceasefire push

First lady Melania Trump announced that she will host Russian and Ukrainian representatives at the White House on Thursday, Nov. 5, with her office describing the gathering as “an unprecedented diplomatic initiative by an American first lady.”

Melania Trump’s office said the meeting will be devoted to the six-day ceasefire she promoted for Oleshki in Ukraine’s Kherson region, and it scheduled her remarks for 11 am Eastern time (1600GMT) Thursday at the White House.

The Kremlin spokesperson Dmitri Peskov confirmed intentions for a separate Russia and Ukraine round of discussions in Abu Dhabi at the beginning of next week, and he said Vladímir Medinski will lead the Russian delegation.

Ukraine accused Russia of exploiting the ceasefire in Oleshki to strengthen its military positions around the Ukrainian city, and a Russian bombardment killed 26 people in an attack on a distribution center for aid one day after the end of the truce.

Moscow rejects truce terms

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told Cadena SER that Russia will not accept any kind of truce, and he said, “there is no glimpse of a realistic dialogue with Europe.” Lavrov also argued that requests for an energy ceasefire, a ceasefire for food supplies, a ceasefire for air power, or a maritime ceasefire “None of these ideas is meant to achieve peace but to allow Zelenskiy to rearm,” according to the report.

The White House said Melania Trump would personally bring representatives of Russia and Ukraine together at the White House, and it framed the event as “an extraordinary moment in American history.” CNN reported that Melania Trump announced on October 23 that she had secured a localized ceasefire to facilitate the humane evacuation of elderly residents from Oleshky, and it said the limited ceasefire began on October 27 and concluded on Sunday.

What the talks could change

Ukraine’s Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets said Melania Trump’s team played an important role in securing the agreement for the humanitarian operation in Oleshky, and he added that representatives from Ukraine, Russia, and the US signed copies of the ceasefire document with Washington acting as a guarantor.

Lubinets disputed reports of ceasefire violations, saying military equipment observed on the Russian side had been used exclusively for demining, while Ukrainian military personnel warned that repeated pauses could give Russian forces opportunities to reinforce their positions.

The Kyiv Post reported that several hundred people, potentially as many as 1,000, reportedly remain in Oleshky, with some unwilling or unable to leave, and it said humanitarian aid had been delivered to those who stayed.

The White House meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 5, and it comes as the U.S. administration prepares talks in Abu Dhabi on November 10 and 11, with the agenda described as including security agreements, de-escalation measures, and humanitarian issues.
