Democrats flip power
Democrats won control of the U.S. Senate in the 2026 elections, setting up divided government for the remainder of President Donald Trump’s term.
Democrats secured control of the chamber after Democrat Josh Turek defeated Republican Rep. Ashley Hinson in Iowa, and NPR said the Senate win came after Democrats needed to flip four GOP seats.
Democrats would flip seats in Texas, North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio, Kansas and Iowa, while Democrats were holding on to seats in Georgia and New Hampshire.
Republicans currently controlled a six-seat majority of 53 seats in the Senate, while Democrats held 47, and Democrats needed to win four seats to win the majority.
Trump reacts, Jeffries
President Donald Trump dialed into Fox News to discuss his reaction to the midterm results, conceding the Democrats "did a good job" and saying he was "a little bit surprised".
Hakeem Jeffries told a cheering crowd at the Democrats' watch party, "Today begins the great American comeback," and Jeffries said, "We're going to work hard to deliver on the dramatic change that you deserve."
PBS said Democrats won control of the U.S. Senate and were on the brink of taking the House, with six Senate seats and more than a half-dozen in the House flipping toward Democrats.
PBS also said Democrats won races for governor including Keisha Lance Bottoms in Georgia, Amy Acton in Ohio, Rod Sand in Iowa and Gina Hinojosa in Texas, and PBS said the AP Voter Poll found voters wanted Congress to impose more checks on Trump.
Oversight, veto, investigations
Democrats’ Senate majority gives the party a new check on President Trump through oversight authority and sets the stage for a long list of investigations that could dominate the remainder of his second term.
Trump told the Pod Force One podcast that he would block Democrats' legislation if they take control of Congress, and NPR quoted Trump saying, "I'll become Mr. Veto," and adding, "and then at some point we'll probably make deals."
A Democrat-majority House would let Democrats chair all parliamentary committees and issue subpoenas to compel government officials, political allies, or those close to Trump to testify under oath and to produce documents.
A Democrat-majority Senate would let Democrats obstruct, delay, or reject Trump’s appointments to the White House, and France 24 said it would also give Democrats control of the agenda by refusing to study texts in committee.
