White House ban announced
President Donald Trump announced that, effective immediately, he is banning CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House, accusing the outlets of constant “reporting” FAKE NEWS!

In a Truth Social post, Trump said, “I am proud to announce that, effective immediately, I am banning Fake News CNN, MSNOW … from the White House as a result of their constant “reporting” FAKE NEWS!”
The Associated Press reported that Trump threatened that more such media prohibitions could be coming as part of what it described as a test of constitutional First Amendment protections.
AP also said the ban came moments before Trump spoke to reporters in the Oval Office as part of a health care event, and that he later planned to take the press pool to his golf club in Virginia for a meeting and dinner sponsored by his Super PAC before spending the weekend at Camp David.
First Amendment challenge
Al Jazeera reported that Trump’s ban will likely be challenged soon, citing Alan Fisher from Washington saying, “The United States has the First Amendment [of its Constitution] that says the government cannot restrict access to this sort of thing,”
AP said Trump offered his administration’s latest test of First Amendment protections guaranteeing the freedom of the press, while also noting that Trump did not provide details on how the ban would be implemented.
BBC reported that it was unclear what exactly a ban would entail, and whether employees of those outlets would be prevented from entering the White House grounds.B
BBC also reported that reporters from both Politico and CNN were still on the White House grounds shortly after the announcement was made, and that Trump said in the Oval Office there was “no reason” for the ban being announced on Friday afternoon.B
Earlier press restrictions
AP said the move followed Trump’s decision in February 2025 to keep Associated Press journalists out of the Oval Office, Air Force One and other events too small for a full press corps, in retaliation for the news outlet’s decision not to follow his lead in changing the Gulf of Mexico’s name.

BBC said that since returning to office in January 2025, Trump and administration officials have repeatedly clashed with members of the White House press corps, including the February move to bar Associated Press reporters and photographers from spaces where access is limited because of the outlet’s usage of the term “Gulf of Mexico” instead of “Gulf of America”.B
In the same BBC account, Trump acknowledged legal challenges may follow his announcement, saying, “I think it’s good to point it out, whether it survives or doesn’t,” and he added, “To be honest with you, I don’t think that a court should allow fake news to be written day after day after day.”B
