Lincoln’s record deployment

The USS Abraham Lincoln’s record deployment has stretched into a ninth month, with the ship kept out of port for more than six months as sailors and families raised concerns about morale and mental health aboard the carrier.

Everyday we wake up and listen to our Captain speak, we are desperately hoping and anxious for updates on our return

CNNCNN

CNN reported that the Lincoln’s crew described conditions including “Everyday we wake up and listen to our Captain speak, we are desperately hoping and anxious for updates on our return,” while the BBC said lawmakers listed “Shortages of basic supplies, water contamination, plumbing issues, deteriorating mental health, deck safety concerns” in a letter to Pete Hegseth.

President Donald Trump dismissed the concerns, telling reporters “No, they’re not,” and he added that the deployment was “not nearly long enough.”

Multiple outlets tied the extended time at sea to the war with Iran, with the BBC saying the carrier was sent to the Middle East ahead of attacks on Iran in February and that the deployment originally set to end in May had been repeatedly extended.

The Navy has said it has not identified an increase in reported suicidal ideation or suicide attempts aboard the Lincoln, with a US Navy official telling the BBC that “traditional supply hubs” had been “disrupted by combat actions.”

Trump vs lawmakers

Trump’s comments came as lawmakers pressed for oversight, with the BBC reporting that Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal called the reported hardships “Shortages of basic supplies, water contamination, plumbing issues, deteriorating mental health, deck safety concerns” and asked for answers from the Pentagon.

In response to the same wave of reporting, Trump told reporters “No, no, not nearly long enough,” while ABC News said he also confirmed that USS George Washington would replace the Lincoln during a long-planned rotation.

The BBC also reported that Ruben Gallego called for a congressional delegation to visit the ship and “conduct oversight investigation into this horrible situation,” adding “There is no reason to be denied access.”

CNN described how a crew member said they had heard repeatedly about suicidal ideation by fellow crew members and said toilets and water fountains around the ship frequently closed and hot water often was unavailable.

The Navy disputed parts of the accounts while acknowledging the conflict had disrupted traditional supply hubs, and the BBC quoted a US Navy official saying the Navy was prioritizing “mission-critical supplies” and that “First food, then hygiene items, then mail.”

Relief and what’s at risk

As the Lincoln’s welfare crisis drew scrutiny, the reported rotation toward the USS George Washington became the clearest sign of relief approaching, with ABC News saying the carrier USS George Washington would replace the Lincoln as part of a long-planned rotation.

The USS George Washington carrier strike group is heading toward the Middle East to replace the Lincoln

13WHAM-TV13WHAM-TV

The 13WHAM-TV report said the George Washington carrier strike group is heading toward the Middle East to replace the Lincoln and that the Lincoln left San Diego on Nov. 21, 2025, before being redirected to the Middle East ahead of the Feb. 28 U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran.

BBC reported that the deployment had been repeatedly extended and that no return date had been announced, while it also said the US was preparing to replace the carrier with the USS George Washington as part of a previously scheduled rotation plan.

Beyond the immediate question of when the Lincoln will leave the Middle East, lawmakers framed the stakes as whether the Navy can sustain the operational tempo, with the BBC quoting Blumenthal asking “whether the Navy can sustain the operational tempo now being demanded of its carrier force.”

In the background of the dispute, CNN reported that the Navy said it had “not observed an increase in suicidal ideations or attempts aboard the ship,” and it said the Navy takes well-being seriously with “religious, medical and mental health professionals available to assess and address concerns as they arise.”
