USS Abraham Lincoln Docks in Thailand After 286 Days at Sea During US-Israeli War With Iran

Lincoln docks after 9 months

The USS Abraham Lincoln, a nuclear-powered Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, docked in eastern Thailand at Laem Chabang port in Chonburi province after a record 286 days at sea during its deployment in the Middle East amid the US-Israeli war with Iran.

The ship carried a crew of 5,000 and arrived early on Wednesday, with the destroyer USS Frank E Petersen Jr sailing past the area accompanied by other US naval vessels, according to Al Jazeera.

In a statement released by the U.S. Embassy and Consulate in Thailand, Rear Adm. Robert E. Loughran said, "Our arrival in Laem Chabang provides a well-deserved opportunity for our Sailors and Marines to rest and recharge," as the Lincoln was expected to be docked for several days before heading to its home base in San Diego.

Al Jazeera reported that the Lincoln had been anchoring the US naval blockade and combat operations during the US-Israeli war on Iran, and that its weathered hull showed large rust patches along the waterline and the edge of the flight deck.

When asked about the aircraft carrier’s lacklustre appearance, Captain Dan Keeler replied, "it is normal for a long deployment" and declined to comment further, as the crew remained out of reach for comment.

Debate over conditions and leadership

Democratic Sen. Ruben Gallego told ABC News that reports of poor conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln reflect what he called "a true lack of leadership" and said the war with Iran and the Trump administration’s planning failures were central to the problem.

Gallego said, "It really goes to the deep, deep, deep problem here is that this administration did not plan for this war," and he argued that the comments from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and President Donald Trump could discourage service members from re-enlisting.

ABC News reported that retired Adm. Mike Mullen said he spoke with U.S. Central Command commander Brad Cooper on Saturday evening and was told that any poor conditions aboard the Lincoln have been addressed and that morale improved after the crew learned it would be returning home.

Mullen told Raddatz that "One of the positives of Cooper's visit yesterday is he announced to the crew that they're going home" and said morale was up significantly from where it was just a few days earlier.

ABC News also quoted Trump dismissing the length of the deployment, saying it is "not nearly long enough," while Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth described reports of poor conditions as "completely misrepresented."

Replacement and wider stakes

The USS George Washington is expected to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln, with ABC News reporting that the George Washington departed from its station in the Pacific Ocean last week and is expected to replace the Lincoln. Al Jazeera reported that acting US Navy Secretary Hung Cao announced the aircraft carrier would soon return home and that the USS George Washington began travelling from the western Pacific to the Middle East, leaving no aircraft carrier in the western Pacific region. Al Jazeera added that the shift leaves no aircraft carrier in the western Pacific region, long a strategic priority for the US, and said the navy had not yet announced plans to replace the USS Washington.

In the same Al Jazeera account, Bradley Martin, a retired US Navy captain and senior policy researcher at the RAND Corporation, warned that "The end state is that you will encounter readiness issues," linking the debate over Lincoln’s reported conditions to broader limits in prolonged operations. Al Jazeera also quoted Alexandru Hudisteanu saying, "They say that amateurs talk strategies, while professionals talk logistics," as he described the burden of logistics for aircraft carriers and cited a closest resupply base described as "a little island somewhere 2,000 miles [3,220km] south of Iran."
