Up to 100% drone tariffs
U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Thursday tariffs of up to 100 percent on imports of unmanned drones and their components, with the White House saying Washington concluded the United States was "too reliant" on foreign sources of drones.
The White House said a 100-percent ad valorem tariff would apply to drones of a certain size or with certain capabilities sensitive for national security purposes, including drones with a take-off weight of more than 25kg and equipped with national security capabilities such as thermal imagers and docking stations.
Smaller drones face a 25 percent tariff, and the White House said most of the new tariff duties take effect Sept 3.
The White House also said the tariffs would "encourage increased domestic production" of drones and their components and reduce reliance on foreign supply chains.
The Chinese company DJI, founded in 2006, has captured more than two-thirds of the global drone market in recent years, according to several studies.
Lutnick findings and timing
In the proclamation text released by the White House, Trump said Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick "had probed the effects of imports of unmanned aircraft systems or drones." Trump said Lutnick found that drone and drone components from certain foreign entities "pose security and safety risks" and that the domestic US industry does not produce enough to meet security needs. The White House said the tariffs will take effect in 21 days, while components of drones that are not particularly sensitive would take effect 180 days after signing.

The White House said the 100% tariff targets include drones, docking stations, and certain core components with specific sizes or functions sensitive from a national security perspective.
China retaliation and allies
Last week, China announced restrictions on drone exports to the United States and blacklisted six companies in response to trade sanctions imposed by Washington over forced labor and national security concerns, according to the reports. That move came days after the US imposed fresh tariffs on China and 59 countries, as the White House framed the drone tariff decision on national security grounds. The tariff schedule also includes a 15% tariff on drones and parts imported from South Korea, the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, and Taiwan, and a 10% tariff on products imported from the United Kingdom.
In an explanatory statement, the White House said, "President Trump's drone tariff program will support and create jobs in the United States by protecting U.S. national security, defense, and the defense-related industrial base." The DW report said the measure would primarily affect China and described DJI as controlling about two-thirds of the global drone market, citing consensus studies.
