Florida map backfires
Florida Democrats won several United States House of Representatives seats that Florida’s Republican-led legislature redrew to favor the GOP, with Kathy Castor holding Florida’s 14th congressional district and Pia Dandiya winning the 22nd while Jared Moskowitz retained the 25th.
The Al Jazeera report said the revised boundaries gave Trump’s party a lead in four Democratic-held districts, the 9th, 14th, 22nd, and 25th, and it said the map was signed into law by Ron DeSantis in May.
DeSantis’ office released a proposed U.S. House district map on Monday, April 27, 2026, seeking to increase the number of Republican-friendly districts in Florida to 24.
Only four districts in the state would favor Democrats in November’s elections if the Legislature approved the map, but in all four of those districts, the Democrat won Tuesday night.
The Newsweek account said the Associated Press called the race for Florida District 25 for Moskowitz at 8:07 p.m. with 51.5 percent of the vote compared to Republican Scott Singer’s 46.4 percent.
Voices and vote margins
Jeff Garcia, a Miami-based Democratic political consultant, told the Miami Herald, "I think they had a bad calculator," as he pointed to voters in swing, largely suburban districts repudiating Trump.
The Miami Herald quoted Jessica Bowlby, a 22-year-old undergraduate student at Florida Gulf Coast University, saying, "Seeing how frustrated the general population has gotten with Donald Trump is really hopeful."
The Washington Post described the outcome as three Democrats in Florida overcoming the GOP’s unusual mid-decade redistricting, with Jared Moskowitz and Kathy Castor winning reelection and Pia Dandiya securing her first.
The Newsweek account said the New York Times called the race for Florida District 14 for Castor with 51.2 percent of the vote compared to Republican Mike Beltran’s 45.9 percent as of 8:22 p.m. ET.
Moskowitz defeated former Boca Raton Mayor Scott Singer, backed by President Trump, and Moskowitz won 51.5 percent of the vote over Singer’s 46.4 percent with more than 95 percent of the vote counted as of 8 p.m. EST.
What it means next
The Al Jazeera report said Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress, including at least 54 Senate seats, framing the Florida results as a major setback for President Donald Trump that could check his power in his final two years in office.
Democrats won three of the four congressional seats in Florida that Republicans redrew this year in their favor, and Democrats were narrowly leading in the fourth.
The Univision account said preliminary results released by the Associated Press showed Democrats kept eight of Florida’s 28 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, with Republicans ahead in 20 districts and Democrats leading in eight.
The Univision report said the Associated Press and Inside Elections had estimated the new layout could give Republicans up to four additional seats in Florida, moving from a delegation of 20 Republicans and eight Democrats to a potential 24 to four distribution, but it said the November 3 results did not materialize in the seat distribution shown in AP’s preliminary data.
Jared Moskowitz said, "This was the most expensive congressional seat in Florida history, and they lit their money on fire," and he said voters sent a message that they should not be gerrymandered out.
