Ghalibaf backs US voters
Iran’s parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said Americans rejected war in the US midterm elections and that Tehran endorses that message. Ghalibaf warned that if the US government betrays the public will to serve “international paymasters and blackmailers,” it would face a “nightmare.”
Ali Nikzad, Iran’s deputy parliament speaker, said US President Donald Trump’s election setback reflected his “defeat against the Iranian people,” and Nikzad also warned against any military adventurism in the Strait of Hormuz. Seyed Mehdi Tabatabaei, deputy head of communications and information at the Iranian president’s office, said the US election results reflected a strong message from American voters in the Senate and Congress elections.
Threats and mediation
Iran’s remarks came as Qatar continued to mediate between Washington and Tehran amid tensions over the US naval blockade and security in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran said Monday that it was still exchanging messages with the US through mediators, and Iran said reopening the strait depends on Washington ending the blockade.
In a separate statement, Iran’s chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf posted on X that “Conscience or the cost of living, Americans said NO TO WAR, and we endorse this message.” Ghalibaf added that if the US government betrays public will to serve “international paymasters and blackmailers,” it will learn “our NO comes with a Nightmare.”
Congress, war powers, risk
Iran’s parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf framed the midterm results as a rebuke of President Donald Trump’s war against Iran, which he said was central to the elections.
The New Indian Express said Trump told Fox News that “I think a part of it was Iran,” while Trump also said, “I don't think about it. I did the right thing. I would have done it again.”
Türkiye Today reported that Democrats secured 51 seats in the 100-member Senate and that AP had called 173 seats for Democrats and 106 for Republicans, with Democrats capturing nine seats previously held by Republicans.
CNBC said Democrats might be able to push through a War Powers Resolution that would direct Trump to end the conflict with Iran should Congress not authorize it, and CNBC also said a concurrent resolution passed in June was not binding and does not have the force of law.
