French TGV Maches Army Convoy Near Paris
TGV collided with a military equipment truck at a level crossing near Bully-les-Mines, Pas-de-Calais. Train driver was killed in the crash.
The Collision
A French high-speed TGV train collided with a military convoy truck in Pas-de-Calais. The train's 56-year-old driver was killed, and 27 others were injured. The truck was part of a military convoy transporting a mobile bridge.
The collision occurred around 7:25 am near Bully-les-Mines. More than 200 passengers were evacuated.
Transport Minister Tabarot and SNCF CEO Castex traveled to the scene. The railway line was suspended for at least 24 hours.
Human Toll and Response
The TGV driver suffered cardiac arrest and died despite efforts to revive him. Two passengers were seriously injured, and 11 others sustained minor injuries. The train was traveling at approximately 160 kilometers per hour at impact.
The truck driver was detained and faces an investigation. Early indications suggested the level crossing was functioning normally.
Rarity of TGV Accidents
Serious accidents involving TGV trains are rare compared with traditional railways. This was the second level crossing collision involving a TGV in just over a week. Safeguards and braking devices likely prevented a much greater tragedy.
