Berlin Pride attack ends

A car-ramming attack on Berlin’s Pride march, at about 10 p.m. on Saturday in Tiergarten park near the Brandenburg Gate, killed one person and injured 29, and German police later shot dead the main suspect, Abdul Ballout, on Sunday.

00:38 01:03 07:49 01:46 02:19 52:05 26:50 20 Minutes with AFP Published July 26, 2026 at 1:30 PM • Updated July 26, 2026 at 5:08 PM The investigation is progressing rapidly after the tragedy that struck the German capital

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said, "Everything we see here indicates that this was an Islamist terror attack," as the investigation moved from the Saturday attack to a police operation in Spandau.

Al Jazeera reported that Ballout was killed after he attacked officers with a bladed weapon, and that the shooting occurred in Spandau, a northwestern district of Berlin.

AP said Ballout died after a manhunt lasting nearly 24 hours following the attack in central Berlin, and that prosecutors said he had previously attempted to join the Islamic State group.

Manhunt, suspect history

Berlin police said Ballout was located at an allotment garden complex in Spandau around 6 p.m., and that he ran toward officers armed with a bladed weapon before police opened fire.

BBC reported that Dobrindt said evidence pointed to it being an "Islamist terror attack," and that the suspect, Abdul Ballout, was a 21-year-old German citizen with Lebanese heritage who rushed at officers with a knife in Spandau.

AP detailed that prosecutors said Ballout traveled to Lebanon in 2025 to go to Syria to join the Islamic State group, was arrested in Lebanon, and was sentenced by a military court to three months in prison for offenses including inciting religious and sectarian conflict.

The BBC also said prosecutors described Ballout’s May 2025 travel via Turkey to Lebanon, his July 2025 arrest, and his May this year sentence of one year and 10 months for "preparing a serious act of violence endangering the state."

Political reactions and review

After the attack, Chancellor Friedrich Merz pledged that the government would "push to make sure this horrific act is fully investigated and punished," and Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner said the manhunt ending within 24 hours was a major success for investigating authorities.

DW reported that Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt told ARD, "we do not believe there is any further danger," while also saying additional measures were underway and that investigators were examining whether others may have been involved.

In France, President Emmanuel Macron expressed his "emotion" and his "solidarity" after the "odious" attack on Berlin’s Pride Saturday night, adding, "In the face of hatred and violence, our response will always be unity, freedom and firmness," on X.

AP said hundreds of mourners gathered at a memorial at the Brandenburg Gate on Sunday afternoon, and it quoted Ashley Jump, a 26-year-old UK resident, saying, "We will never be erased, we will never disappear."
