Gunman crashed car into Citibank Center campus in Brandon and opened fire. Armed security guard killed the gunman during a gunfight.

Targeted Citibank attack

A shooting at Citibank's office complex in Tampa, Florida, killed two people, including the suspect, on Wednesday, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. Hillsborough County Chief Deputy Frank Losat said authorities received multiple 911 calls reporting a shooting around 12:11 p.m., and he described the suspect as driving his four-door sedan through a fenced area and crashing into an outdoor dining area where people were having lunch. Losat said the suspect exited the vehicle with a rifle, approached a woman, and she was shot, while a Citibank security guard confronted the gunman and shot him during an exchange of gunfire in the building's cafeteria.

Losat said the suspect was taken to an area hospital and pronounced dead, and he said at least four other people were being treated with no life-threatening injuries. Losat said investigators were still conducting interviews with witnesses and that police spent more than two hours clearing the scene.

Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said on social media that, based on preliminary information, "we believe this is a targeted incident." Frank Losat told reporters that investigators have to "work through details" and that information is subject to change as they determine whether the suspect and shooting victim knew each other. Citi CEO Jane Fraser confirmed in an internal message that the victim was a Citi employee and said, "This is a terrible tragedy for our Citi family."

Losat also commended the security guard who "stopped the threat," saying there was "potential" for further violence. WFLA reported that witness Sonja Barker said, "I saw people running, and then I heard shots, and so my first instinct is I’m going to run too," as employees fled the plaza.

Aftermath and response

Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said the incident prompted a massive law enforcement response, including heavily armed deputies and armored vehicles, and it said the crime scene was "very large" and would be processed possibly into Thursday. Losat said there were some 3,200 Citibank employees on the property at the time, and he said police spent more than two hours clearing the scene. Citi said the company was coordinating with law enforcement and that the Tampa campus was secure, while Citi CEO Jane Fraser told employees, "Today’s news is incredibly distressing, and we have counseling and other resources available to help you through the difficult days ahead."

Losat said authorities cleared all the buildings in the complex and that additional security would be added at all other Citi sites as necessary. ABC News said agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives would be responding to the scene, as investigators continued interviews with Citibank employees.
