Austin ICE shooting
A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer shot and wounded a man Sunday afternoon in Austin, Texas, local authorities said, and Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said the unnamed man was in serious but stable condition after being shot once in the torso on the city’s north side.
The shooting occurred after a traffic stop, Davis told reporters, and she said Austin police officers were not involved in the operation or the shooting.
Austin Mayor Kirk Watson said he wants the city’s police department to be involved in the investigation so it can provide “clear, third-party eyes,” and he said he does not think it would be appropriate for ICE to conduct an investigation on its own.
The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, did not participate in the news conference and didn’t immediately respond to requests for details, while a crowd of about a hundred protesters gathered near the scene.
U.S. Rep. Greg Casar said, “It is awful that this horror has come to our doorstep,” as the incident came amid ICE surges that produced more than 50,000 arrests a month for the first time in its history in July and August.
Protests and demands
As the incident was investigated, protesters quickly gathered at the scene, with some demonstrators cursing at police officers holding riot shields while others yelled as passing cars honked in support of the protest.
Austin Mayor Kirk Watson said, “Austinites have a right to feel safe in their city,” and he added that a proper investigation will only enhance credibility.
U.S. Rep. Greg Casar called for transparency as the shooting is investigated, saying, “For Austin to be safe, ICE should end its surge here.”
CBS News reported that Austin City Council member Mike Siegel alleged an ICE officer rammed the man’s car, then got out of his federal vehicle and opened fire at least five times.
CNN reported that Watson said questions remain and he expressed skepticism over whether ICE can do an independent investigation, while Robert Luckritz said the shooting happened just before 1 p.m. on Austin’s north side.
Investigation stakes
City officials said local authorities were not involved in the shooting, but they emphasized that the investigation should be independent and credible, with Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis saying her department’s special investigation unit was at the scene.
“Austin police and Texas Rangers will also be involved in the investigation.”
FOX 7 Austin reported that Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed ICE was handling an investigation in the 7000 block of West Anderson, and it said Austin police and Texas Rangers would also be involved.
KSAT said Austin police and Texas Rangers plan to investigate the shooting along with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and it quoted Davis saying “Austinites should know the truth” while Luckritz said the man had a single gunshot wound.
The incident also fed into broader scrutiny of ICE operations, with NBC News noting that in July an ICE officer fatally shot Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston during an attempted traffic stop to conduct an immigration arrest.
In the same news cycle, CNN said the shooting was the latest incident of federal officers shooting a person during the Trump administration’s efforts to dramatically increase immigration enforcement operations across the country, as questions about what happened remained unresolved.
