Drone blast kills reservists
Two Israeli reservists were killed in Gaza after a military drone crashed inside their post in the northern Gaza Strip and exploded moments later, according to the Israeli military.
“Both were evacuated to Barzilai Medical Center in Ashkelon, where they were pronounced dead.”
The IDF identified the dead as Master Sgt. (res.) Nadav Kali, 24, of Har Halutz, and Master Sgt. (res.) Ofek Moalem, 23, from Jerusalem, and it said the incident occurred Thursday near Beit Hanoun.
The military said the first drone launched successfully and reached its intended destination, while the second drone crashed inside the military post and then exploded as the soldiers approached the downed aircraft.
The deaths were announced after the reservists were taken to Barzilai Medical Center in Ashkelon, where they were pronounced dead, and the military said it opened an investigation into the cause.
The IDF also said it suspended use of the drone model involved in the explosion pending the findings of the investigation.
Investigation and grounded drones
The IDF said it was investigating what caused the drone to crash and subsequently explode, and it said all possibilities were being examined, including whether communications interference contributed to the drone's malfunction.
The Jerusalem Post reported that the IDF temporarily grounded attack and munition-dropping drones across its combat sectors while investigating the incident, and it described the crash as occurring during a second operation after a first drone completed its intended mission.
The Times of Israel said the military temporarily grounded all small drones capable of carrying explosive payloads, and it said IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir ordered a panel of experts to investigate the deadly accident.
The Media Line said the IDF suspended drone operations pending the findings of the initial investigation, while TRT World said the incident was under review and quoted a military source saying, "The incident is under review."T
The Times of Israel said the panel would "examine the circumstances of the incident in order to prevent similar incidents from recurring in the future," linking the immediate suspension to preventing future accidents.
Ceasefire disputes and wider toll
Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem rejected assertions that the ceasefire agreement continues to hold, saying the claim "completely contradicts the reality on the ground." Qassem said Israeli occupation forces have killed more than 1,400 Palestinians in Gaza since the ceasefire agreement took effect, and he accused Israel of continuing to restrict humanitarian aid by keeping crossings closed and preventing the Palestinian administrative committee from entering Gaza. The Palestine Chronicle reported that Nikolay Mladenov said the ceasefire had "held, albeit fragilely" and that "a new framework is beginning to take shape" that did not exist a year earlier.

CNN Arabic said Israel has been conducting strikes on Gaza almost daily and that the Israeli army began a ground assault on the Gaza Strip on October 27, 2023, about three weeks after Hamas-led attacks inside Israel left about 1,200 people dead. CNN Arabic also said about 1,000 Israeli soldiers have been killed since the war began on October 7, 2023, and it added that the last death in the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip occurred in February, in a blue-on-blue shooting incident.
