Proportionate retaliation vow
Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei warned at a weekly press conference that Iran will not leave any act of aggression unanswered and said any response will be at least proportional to the attack. Baqaei dismissed a claim that the US has sent a message about a possible strike on Mount Kolang in Iran, asking whether anyone expected Tehran to allow Washington to attack without retaliation.
Baqaei said, “The era of hit-and-run attacks is over,” and added that Iran has demonstrated in practice that it would respond to every strike “in equal measure, if not more forcefully.” Baqaei also said Iran has endured eight months of an imposed war of aggression and has learned from past experience, while urging regional countries not to be swayed by claims from powers seeking to subjugate others through force.
Diplomacy as defense
Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said diplomacy is an inseparable part of defense and struggle and that Iran insists on nothing other than securing Iran’s national interests. Baghaei told reporters, “We insist on nothing other than securing Iran’s national interests,” and he said, “Our concern is Iran—whether through diplomacy or through defense.”
Baghaei said, “In this conception, diplomacy is a component of defense, and no distinction should be made between the battlefield and the diplomatic arena.” Baghaei added that Iran would pursue diplomatic efforts if there were even the slightest possibility that they could prevent an escalation of tensions, while also describing the United States’ record of violating commitments since 2018.
Yemen and regional disputes
Esmaeil Baghaei said the Yemen crisis could not be resolved through force or military action and stressed that a solution must be reached through dialogue and reconciliation between Saudi Arabia and Yemen. Baghaei said at his weekly press briefing that the Yemen issue should be resolved through dialogue and reconciliation between Saudi Arabia and Yemen, while also arguing that the people of Yemen have been under a blockade for over a decade.
Baghaei described the Organization of Islamic Cooperation meeting as highly important and said a distinction must be made between a statement and a resolution, with the final statement adopted by consensus. Baghaei said Iran opposed inclusion of clauses regarding Yemen in the OIC statement and that Iran prevented the inclusion of two specific paragraphs concerning Yemen.
