Diplomacy, then force

Behrouz Kamalvandi, spokesperson for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, told reporters on Sunday that Iran would pursue its national interests through diplomacy if possible, but would use force if necessary. Kamalvandi said Iranian authorities had stressed that the country was pursuing negotiations and resistance simultaneously, while he added that securing those interests through diplomacy would be preferable. Kamalvandi also said Iran would seek to achieve its interests on the battlefield if diplomacy did not work.

NPT, IAEA, and resistance

Behrouz Kamalvandi said Iran would continue to defend its rights and interests, insisting that diplomatic engagement and resistance were complementary rather than contradictory approaches.

Kamalvandi told reporters, “If our interests can be secured through diplomacy, so much the better. Otherwise, we will secure them with strength and determination on the battlefield,” and he said Iran would not allow other countries to use force to obtain concessions they had failed to secure through negotiations.

Kamalvandi criticized the IAEA’s handling of Iran’s nuclear file, saying political influence had prevented the agency from fulfilling its responsibilities.

Kamalvandi said any decision on withdrawing from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty would involve the Iranian parliament, which would conduct the necessary deliberations.

Kamalvandi reiterated that Iran’s nuclear program is peaceful, transparent and subject to continuous IAEA monitoring, and he said international reports had demonstrated that Iran’s activities had remained on the right track.
