Trump predicts rapid end

US President Donald Trump said the war in Iran “will end very quickly,” and he told a rally in Nebraska that “We’re saving the world from what could be one of the worst tragedies ever.” Trump said American forces have succeeded in destroying Iranian radar and air defenses and in taking control of the Strait of Hormuz, while he argued that steps Washington is taking protect the world from “the worst disaster of all time.”

Trump also said the rise in prices is a “small cost” the world pays in exchange for maintaining security and stability, and he expected prices to start falling once the dispute is resolved. Trump added that the United States is receiving “hundreds of millions of barrels of oil weekly from Venezuela,” and he said oil flows into the country are happening “in an unprecedented way.”

Iran rejects military solution

Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi told foreign ambassadors based in Tehran that “There is no military solution and no solution based on more sanctions,” and he said only negotiations grounded in “justice, and diplomatic dignity” can end the war. Araghchi warned that if the United States resorts to military action, Tehran is ready to take all necessary measures to “defend ourselves with even more force,” and he framed the conflict as “unlawful aggression” launched against the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Iran’s position also tied the Strait of Hormuz to conditions, with Sky News reporting that the waterway “will not reopen unless seven conditions set out in an interim agreement with the US in June are met.” Sky News quoted Foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei saying Iran’s restoration of security in the Strait of Hormuz can only be assured if there is confidence the United States will fulfil its commitments, and it said Iran denied offering UN nuclear watchdog inspections in exchange for sanctions relief.

Talks, retaliation, and stakes

Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian told IRNA that negotiating with the United States makes no sense, and he said the United States imposes sanctions and pressures and issues threats daily while being “accustomed to 'reneging on its promises.'” Trump said the United States is open to direct talks with Iran, but he also told reporters that the war with Iran will end “one way or another...either they'll do something very proper and smart or they won't be around very long.”

“The decision is now in the hands of the United States.”

Elplural described the exchange as Iran and Trump “negotiate with one hand while preparing retaliation with the other,” and it quoted Trump threatening that “We will strike a deal with Iran that allows them to rebuild a country bigger than the one they had before or I will annihilate them.” Elplural also quoted an Iranian official saying, “If the necessary conditions are met, the strait can be reopened and normal maritime traffic will be reestablished within seven days,” and it said “The decision is now in the hands of the United States.”
