Iran takes case to UN
Iran’s Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Gholamhossein Darzi urged the UN to address European countries’ complicity in what he called war crimes committed by the United States and Israel during their war of aggression against the Islamic Republic of Iran. Darzi sent the remarks in a letter to the UN chief and the Security Council president on Saturday, three days after NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte acknowledged that some 5,000 sorties were flown from European bases in support of the terrorist military assault against Iran.
Darzi said he was drawing the UN’s attention to Rutte’s “deeply disturbing and consequential admission” about the “indispensable role played by European territory and infrastructure” in facilitating acts of aggression and war crimes. Darzi told the UN Security Council that the admission “warrants the immediate and serious attention of the Security Council” and urged member states to treat it with “the seriousness it warrants.”
Rutte’s sorties and Iran’s tally
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said during a September 23 public discussion on NATO’s future that approximately 5,000 aircraft had taken off from European bases in support of the US-led Operation Epic Fury since February 28, 2026. Rutte’s remarks, as Iran presented them to the UN, described the figure as covering activity only through mid-April, and the NATO transcript said the operation would arguably have been impossible without European bases.
Iran’s Ambassador and Chargé d’Affaires to the United Nations Gholamhossein Darzi argued that the use of European territory and infrastructure in facilitating US military operations could raise questions of international responsibility and potential individual responsibility for acts Iran considers aggression and war crimes. Darzi also cited Iranian figures that more than 3,600 people were killed during the 40-day US-Israeli aggression, and he said the campaign targeted civilians and civilian objects in disregard of international humanitarian law.
Security Council scrutiny sought
Iran urged the Security Council to examine European support for US military operations against Iran, arguing that such assistance could raise questions of international responsibility for states and officials involved. Darzi said the UN Security Council cannot remain silent and urged member states to reject any attempt to normalize the participation of third states in acts of aggression.
Darzi also argued that the conduct “constitutes a violation of the Charter of the United Nations” and that it amounts to participation in and assistance to an act of aggression within the meaning of General Assembly resolution 3314 (XXIX), entitled “Definition of Aggression.” Iran’s complaint placed the issue before the Security Council while it said questions surrounding the legality of the conflict and the use of force remained highly contentious, and it described the ongoing US blockade of Iranian territory as unlawful.
