UN letter and bomb threat

Iran’s ambassador and chargé d’affaires to the United Nations, Gholamhossein Darzi, warned the UN secretary-general and the Security Council about what his letter called the “arrogant threats” of US President Donald Trump and the “Zionist regime.”

Darzi told the UN that the threats are part of US and Zionist regime wars of aggression against Iran that began on June 13, 2025 and Feb. 28, 2026, and he said they include deliberate attacks on civilians and critical infrastructure.

Darzi cited US media reports on Oct. 15, 2026 that the White House and Pentagon had prepared military options including the possible use of the GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast, known as the “mother of all bombs,” against Iran.

Darzi also said Israeli war minister Yisrael Katz announced on Oct. 18, 2026 that Israel was ready to attack Iran and that in any new aggression “all energy facilities” would be targeted, with the aim of returning Iran to the “Stone Age.”

Araghchi response and escalation

Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, warned that Tehran also has “unfinished business” and will respond if attacks are repeated after Donald Trump threatened Iran with new military strikes.

Araghchi wrote on the social network X that “The last time you wanted to finish the job, Iran proved stronger than before,” and he added, “Do you want to try your luck again? Go ahead, but beware; we also have unfinished business!”

Trump said on Truth Social that the United States might have to “finish the job soon” if Tehran does not quickly change its approach, and he wrote, “If Israel has an unsuitable leader, meaning anyone but BB, the United States will have to do this job alone.”

Israeli experts told Times of Israel that a renewed Iran war is only a matter of time, and Danny Citrinowicz said, “Without a diplomatic settlement, the chances of escalation are very high.”

Defense minister and next steps

Iran appointed Mehrdad Akhlaghi as its new defense minister on Sunday, replacing an acting minister who had served since his predecessor was killed in an Israeli strike in February. Akhlaghi warned that if the US resumes its military campaign against Iran, “People can rest assured that they will most likely not dare to attack us,” and he said, “If they (the US) do, they themselves and the region will suffer enormous damage.”

Akhlaghi also told reporters that he had been a potential assassination target for decades, saying, “I have been on the enemy's assassination list for 35 years,” and he warned that if the “American-Israeli enemy makes another mistake,” Iran’s response would be “surprising and extensive.” Abbas Araghchi said Tehran’s proposal to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz under a seven-day framework remained on the table, and he said, “If there is any sincerity on the American side, the path forward is clear: If the conditions are met, the strait will reopen on the sixth day and negotiations will resume on the seventh.”
