Rome talks set

Israel and Lebanon are scheduled to hold US-led talks in Rome from August 4 to August 6 to evaluate expanding the pullback of Israeli military forces in southern Lebanon and address long-standing land border disagreements.

The upcoming round of American-brokered trilateral discussions will run from August 4 to August 6

Israel National NewsIsrael National News

A State Department official told Axios that the technical groups in Rome will focus on advancing the full implementation of the framework agreement, including expanding the pilot zone process and resolving all outstanding border issues.

The talks follow a June 26 framework announcement in Washington outlining a withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern areas alongside the deployment of the Lebanese army, slated to begin within two designated pilot zones.

The execution of the pact is described as conditional on the total disarmament of Hezbollah, which the Iran-backed group has rejected.

The Rome discussions are also framed as building on Lebanese President Joseph Aoun’s White House summit with President Donald Trump last week, with the official citing “significant momentum.”

Momentum and conditions

Multiple outlets describe the Rome agenda as centered on “advancing the full implementation of the framework agreement,” with the same State Department official adding that it includes expanding pilot zones and working toward a comprehensive peace and security agreement.

The Jerusalem Post says the pilot areas in southern Lebanon are intended for Lebanese troops to verify that areas have been cleared of Hezbollah terrorists and weapons, and it links the approach to restoring Lebanese state authority through verified disarmament.

Anadolu Ajansı reports that Israeli attacks in Lebanon since March 2 have killed 4,328 people and injured 12,232 others, while also noting Israel continues to occupy parts of southern Lebanon.

The New York Post frames the 14-point Israel-Lebanon Trilateral Framework Agreement around disarmament of Hezbollah and says Jerusalem emphasized that a full Israeli withdrawal will occur only once the threat from the Iranian terror proxy is removed.

In the same reporting stream, the US also confirmed the talks as part of creating pilot zones with the Lebanese army, while the Lebanese army condemned the continuation of Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon as preventing its deployment as planned by the June agreement.

What’s at stake

The State Department official quoted by TRT Français describes the first pilot zone as a “concrete opportunity” to restore Lebanese state authority through the verifiable disarmament of terrorist organizations and to strengthen trust for next steps.

TRT Français also says the trilateral framework is “the only path to lasting peace,” and it adds that the Trump administration is determined to ensure its success.

Israel National News ties the framework’s implementation to disarmament of Hezbollah and says the Iran-backed terrorist group has completely rejected the framework and the underlying bilateral peace talks.

Anadolu Ajansı reports that the June 26 framework agreement provides for a phased Israeli withdrawal from all occupied Lebanese territory but does not include a timetable, linking completion to the Lebanese army assuming full security responsibility and the disarmament of armed groups including Hezbollah.

With the Rome talks set for August 4 to August 6, the sources portray the next phase as dependent on how pilot-zone implementation proceeds and whether border issues and security arrangements can be advanced under the trilateral framework.
