UN accuses Israel
A UN-commissioned Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory accused Israel of deliberately shooting children in Gaza and repeated its accusation that Israel has committed genocide in the territory during its 2 1/2 year war in Gaza.

The commission’s report said roughly 30% of the Palestinians killed from October 2023 to October 2025—more than 20,000 in total—were children, and it said the toll on children amounted to war crimes and genocide.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry called the report a “libelous sham” and said the claims included hadn’t been verified, while the commission’s chair Srinivasan Muralidhar said, “Even after the October 2025 ceasefire, children continue to be killed and seriously injured.”
In southern Gaza, an Israeli drone strike killed 12-year-old Ahmed Mohsen al-Reqeb in the sprawling tent camp Muwasi, according to health officials at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, and the Israeli military said it struck a “Hamas terrorist” without elaborating.
Ceasefire strikes continue
Despite the ceasefire, Anadolu Ajansı reported that an Israeli strike killed a Palestinian child in a tent sheltering displaced people in Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip, with the body arriving at Nasser Hospital and a medical source describing two injured in critical condition.
An Israeli drone missile hit the tent in the Ard al-Basal area of Al-Mawasi, and Anadolu said eyewitnesses described the strike as killing the child and wounding others with varying degrees of injuries.
The same Anadolu report said Israeli military vehicles opened fire toward Palestinian homes east of the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza, and it added that two Palestinians were killed and 14 others injured in attacks on the Gaza Strip over the past 24 hours, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
In Gaza City, CBC News described a quadcopter drone attack on May 21 that killed 13-year-old Jude Muhammad Dweik while he was playing soccer with his friends in Beit Lahia, and Talal Dweik told El Saife, “Every day there's an attack on us.”
What is at stake
The UN inquiry’s findings, as described by CBC News, centered on the “deliberate targeting of children,” and it said evidence showed Israeli security forces had deliberately targeted and killed Palestinian children.
“By SAM METZ JERUSALEM (AP) — A team of independent experts commissioned by the United Nations accused Israel of deliberately shooting children in Gaza and repeated its accusation that Israel has committed genocide in the territory”
CBC News also quoted Srinivasan Muralidhar saying that by targeting children, “Israel is attacking the very capacity of the Palestinian people to exist and to determine their future,” and it added that he said children continued to be killed and seriously injured even after the October 2025 ceasefire.
The Boston Herald reported that neither the commission nor the Human Rights Council has the authority to take action, but it said findings could be used by prosecutors at the International Criminal Court or the U.N.’s International Court of Justice, which is hearing an ongoing genocide case filed by South Africa.
The Boston Herald further said the ICC has already issued warrants for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, with prosecutors accusing the two men of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza, including using starvation as a weapon of warfare.
