Hebron raid displaces thousands

Israeli soldiers beat and injured Hijazi Shawer, a 70-year-old Palestinian shopkeeper and community leader, during a raid in Hebron in the occupied West Bank. Israeli forces also carried out house-to-house searches and forced displacement of more than 2,000 people in Hebron.

Haaretz reported that approximately 250 Palestinian families were evacuated from their homes overnight from Friday into Saturday in the Hebron neighborhood where the two Palestinians who carried out Friday's shooting attack lived. The Times of Israel said Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz told the Kan public broadcaster, "About 2,000 have been displaced," and added that residents would not be allowed to return until the military finished dealing with Hamas issues in Hebron.

Soldiers, gunmen, and operations

The IDF said it launched a major counterterrorism operation in the West Bank city of Hebron after a shooting attack in which two Palestinian gunmen killed two IDF soldiers.

The Times of Israel reported that the IDF said the raid was "focused and limited to the area from which the terrorists operated," and that it was expected to last several days.

Ynetnews quoted IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir praising soldiers from the Home Front Command's Ari Battalion, saying, "The soldiers' swift action prevented an even more serious attack and further harm to civilians and security forces."

Ynetnews also identified the two Hamas-affiliated terrorists as Hamouda Wael Mohammed Jaaba, 27, and his relative Firas Samir Mohammed Jaaba, 27, both from Hebron, and said investigators found a large quantity of explosives and ammunition in the terrorists' vehicle.

Evacuations, demolitions, and claims

Haaretz said the evacuations were carried out in the Hebron neighborhood where the two Palestinians who carried out Friday's shooting attack lived, and it quoted the city's deputy mayor, Khaled Fahed al-Qawasmi. The Times of Israel reported that Palestinian residents living in the area where the troops were operating would be able to leave through three designated exit points, following questioning and security checks, and it added that "anyone who raises suspicion during the checks will be taken for questioning by security forces."

The Times of Israel said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the IDF and security forces "to immediately impose a cordon around Hebron and prepare for a full lockdown of all of Judea and Samaria beginning Friday." The Times of Israel also quoted Palestinian activist Issa Amro urging "the UN, international governments, and humanitarian organizations to act now: protect civilians, demand an end to unlawful demolitions and collective restrictions, and ensure safe access to essential supplies and emergency services."
