Doha strike as leverage
US President Donald Trump’s envoy and son-in-law Jared Kushner said Washington used Israel’s international isolation after its September 2025 airstrike in Doha to pressure Israel toward a Gaza ceasefire and hostage-release agreement.

Israeli officials rejected Kushner’s account of the Doha strike’s role in producing the Gaza agreement, telling i24NEWS that the strike—not Israel’s isolation—led to the latest hostage deal by showing Hamas it has “no immunity.”

Kushner, speaking remotely at the Yalta European Strategy conference, said the Trump administration used the diplomatic fallout to increase pressure on Israel to accept the U.S.-backed agreement.
He also said, “At the time, they were a little uncomfortable with kind of what we were pushing them to do,” while arguing that the eventual outcome proved beneficial for Israel and Palestinians in Gaza.
Deal, hostages, and next phase
Kushner linked the Doha episode to a subsequent ceasefire outcome, saying that exactly one month later on Oct. 9 Israel and Hamas signed a ceasefire agreement that led to the release of 48 hostages.

He said the released hostages included “both living captives and the bodies of hostages who had died while being held in Gaza,” and he argued that the agreement ultimately proved beneficial for Israel and Palestinians in Gaza.
Kushner also said the Trump administration was pushing ahead with a roadmap for the next phase in Gaza, including plans for a new governing structure and the territory’s eventual demilitarization.
In that roadmap, Kushner said the plan includes an Israeli withdrawal, expanded humanitarian aid, the launch of a Palestinian national committee to administer Gaza, and the beginning of reconstruction efforts in the territory.
