UN accuses Israel

A UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, accused Israel of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity, including extermination, persecution, torture, rape and other forms of sexual violence, and said genocide continues in Gaza. The commission said its report to the UN General Assembly found that the situation in the West Bank has deteriorated gravely since 7 October 2023, with deaths from airstrikes rising from six Palestinians killed between 2008 and 6 October 2023 to 254 killed between 7 October 2023 and 30 September 2026. The commission also asserted that in Gaza, Israeli authorities and forces continue to commit genocidal acts even after the so-called ceasefire agreement, with the intent to destroy the Palestinian people, in whole or in part.

Israel Defence Forces (IDF) meanwhile announced it has eliminated four operatives affiliated with Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad in targeted strikes across the Gaza Strip, and the Israeli military confirmed three operatives were killed during operations on Sunday. The UN commission’s findings arrived as the IDF said it identified Islamic Jihad operatives Alaa Abu Zaid and Hamdan Suleiman Ibrahim Abu Amra, and Hamas sniper operative Fawzi Salam Odat Allah Sawarha.

Israel rejects, Turk warns

The UN-mandated investigators said Israel has committed crimes against humanity, including “extermination”, in the occupied West Bank, and the commission also reported responsibility for other war crimes and crimes against humanity including torture, rape and other forms of sexual violence. Israel’s mission in Geneva rejected the report as part of a “misinformation campaign to demonise the State of Israel and portray its very existence as criminal,” and it urged the international community to demand the commission’s immediate dissolution. UN Human Rights Commissioner Volker Turk condemned the ongoing Israeli operation in Hebron, saying threats to empty and erase neighbourhoods raise “serious concerns of ethnic cleansing.”

Turk said the lockdown in Hebron had already resulted in the forcible displacement of over 2,000 Palestinians, the demolition of homes and the prevention of residents from moving freely. Turk added that “Collective punishment is a grave violation of international law,” and he insisted displaced people must be allowed to return home and that Israel must ensure compensation and reparation for unlawful evictions and demolitions.

Ceasefire does not stop

Associated Press reported that UN-commissioned experts said a Gaza ceasefire agreement has not stopped Israel from committing genocide, and the report said the commission accused Israeli forces of crimes against humanity including torture and rape in the West Bank. The commission said Israel was “continuing to commit genocidal acts with the genocidal intent to destroy, in whole or in part, the Palestinians in Gaza,” and it said much of the harm came from Israel’s expansion deeper into Gaza during the ceasefire period. The commission reported that since October 2025, when the ceasefire was signed, Israeli forces have gone from controlling 53% of Gaza to at least 60%, and it said Israeli fire across the advancing front has killed at least 196 Palestinians, including 18 women, 32 boys and 11 girls.

“Israel was ‘continuing to commit genocidal acts with the genocidal intent to destroy, in whole or in part, the Palestinians in Gaza.’”

The commission also said it had recently documented six cases where Israeli guards were sexually violent toward male detainees from Gaza in the Sde Teiman military prison, and it described one case where guards raped a Palestinian detainee with a stick and forced him to put the stick in his mouth until he vomited. The findings were described as potentially usable by prosecutors at the International Criminal Court or in other jurisdictions, and the Associated Press said it could not independently corroborate multiple graphic accounts described in the report of sexual assaults by prison guards and soldiers on Palestinian detainees since October 2023.
