UN links Gaza and West Bank
UN fact-finding mission investigators accused Israel of committing crimes against humanity, including “extermination,” against the Palestinian population in the West Bank in a report published on Monday, and they also denounced the continuation of genocide in Gaza despite the truce agreed in the Strip in October 2025. Srinivasan Muralidhar, the Commission’s chair, said, “Killings and injuries deliberately inflicted on Palestinian civilians, as well as the destruction of their homes in the West Bank, together with Israel’s persistent refusal to assume responsibility, form part of a broader strategy aimed at exterminating and displacing Palestinians and imposing intolerable living conditions,” in a statement on Monday. The UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry described Israeli military operations and repeated settler attacks as a systematic policy of violence and forcible displacement aimed at expanding Israeli control over the occupied territories.
The UN report also said that since January 2025 Israeli military operations have caused the largest displacement of the Palestinian population in the West Bank since the 1967 war, and it put the number of displaced people at 34,176 by August 2026. The UN report further said that last Friday an Israeli operation in Hebron caused the forced displacement of more than 2,000 Palestinians, according to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Media, witnesses, and “mediacide”
UN special rapporteur Francesca Albanese accused the Israeli government of tampering with news related to the war to present a picture different from what is happening on the ground, alongside the annihilation of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Albanese told Al Jazeera that Israel deliberately sought to eliminate witnesses during this war by killing journalists, destroying the media infrastructure, and targeting the families of media workers, and she said Israel tightened its press restrictions and forbade publishing certain news. Albanese also said, “the destruction of truth has become a central element in the destruction of a people,” in her report to the General Assembly, and she described some aspects of the attack as a “mediacide.”
The UN report said the Gaza conflict is “the deadliest ever for journalists,” and it stated that since October 2023 Israeli forces have killed almost 300 journalists and injured more than 400. The UN report added that about 70 journalists were killed in retaliation for their work, and it quoted an Israeli soldier saying, “Anyone who writes an article or works with a laptop is like someone carrying a Kalashnikov and attacking us.”
Ceasefire, killings, and legal fallout
The UN-commissioned experts described a Gaza ceasefire that has not stopped genocide, saying Israeli forces killed 14 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip over the past two days, according to the Palestinian health ministry. The Palestinian health ministry said the latest victim was six-year-old Tahani Mohammad Shalalfah, who was shot dead by Israeli soldiers on Tuesday, and local media reported that Israeli tanks fired heavily in the Al-Alam and Al-Shakoush areas west of Rafah. The Palestinian health ministry said the death toll since October 2023 had risen to 74,561, including 1,565 people killed since the ceasefire took effect in October 2025, while the UN commission said Israel continues to commit genocide in Gaza.
The UN report also said the so-called Yellow Line had become “a steadily encroaching de facto border,” reflecting Israel’s expanding territorial control over Gaza. In response to the UN-sponsored probe, Israel’s mission in Geneva called the report part of a “misinformation campaign to demonize the State of Israel and portray its very existence as criminal,” and it demanded the commission’s dissolution.
