Rideout freed in Niger
Kevin Rideout, an American missionary abducted in Niger, was released after more than nine months in captivity, with SIM International saying he was “released after over nine months in captivity.”

SIM International said Rideout was kidnapped near his home in Niger’s capital Niamey on Oct. 21, 2025, and that he was released into the care of U.S. officials and is in good health.
CNN reported that SIM International Director Phil Bauman told CNN in a statement that “Kevin is in good health in the care of US officials,” and that Rideout would soon be reunited with his family.C
The Washington Post said Rideout was kidnapped from outside his home in Niger’s capital, Niamey, on Oct. 21, and described his disappearance as setting off a scramble within the U.S. government.
The New York Times reported that Rideout is in U.S. custody and on his way to the United States, with two U.S. officials saying details of how and precisely where he was released were unclear.
Officials, custody and uncertainty
CNN said Rideout was seized by three unidentified men on Oct. C21, 2025, and that they later headed toward the western Tillaberi region of Niger, where Islamist militants are active.
The New York Times reported that Rideout was in F.B.I. custody and in good health based on proof-of-life images provided to American officials in the past 48 hours.
The Washington Post said the White House and the State Department did not immediately comment on the circumstances of his release, and it described the release details as unclear.
Fox News Digital reported that no information has been released about the group that took Rideout, while The Washington Post said his disappearance set off a scramble within the U.S. government against a backdrop of a perilous security situation.
NPR reported that the U.S. NState Department has not yet confirmed his release and that details of how and where Rideout was released were not given.
Niger’s security stakes
The U.S. Embassy in Niamey issued a security alert a day after Rideout’s abduction, warning that Americans “remain at a heightened risk of kidnapping throughout Niger, including in the capital city.”

Fox News reported that Niger has been a hotbed for Islamic terrorism since a military junta overthrew the democratically elected government in 2023, and it cited the Global Terrorism Index in 2025 for a “almost fourteenfold increase in fatalities” tied to JNIM activity in Niger.
CNN said Niger has faced a surge in attacks from militant groups linked to al Qaeda and the so-called Islamic State, and it noted that Rideout was taken toward the western Tillaberi region where Islamist militants are active.C
The Guardian reported that in June, more than 30 people were killed when gunmen attacked the main airport in Niamey, the second attack this year at the airport that serves as the ruling military’s command.
The New York Times said the release of Rideout had been a priority for the White House and the military’s Africa Command since his abduction, and it described his work in Niger for 19 years as a Christian missionary pilot for Serving in Mission.
