Lavrov in Tehran
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and President Masoud Pezeshkian in Tehran to review expanding Iran-Russia ties and to stress ongoing consultations between Tehran and Moscow. Araghchi wrote on X, “Never in our history have Iran and Russia worked as closely as now,” after the meeting.
Lavrov also pledged Moscow’s support for Iran when he met Araghchi and Pezeshkian, and he said Russian specialists who had left Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant would gradually return. Araghchi said relations between Tehran and Moscow had reached “unprecedented levels,” and he wrote that they discussed cooperation in economic and nuclear fields along with issues ranging from Europe to West Asia.

Alliance, but not pact
Araghchi and Lavrov emphasized the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement inked between Iran and Russia, and they exchanged views on strengthening political, economic, and commercial cooperation. The two sides have a strategic partnership, while their treaty “stops short of a military alliance,” and Putin and Pezeshkian signed a 20-year Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty in Moscow in January 2025.
Kurdistan24 quoted Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei warning that Iran would “leave no American attack without a response,” and he urged Islamic countries against military intervention in Yemen. Baghaei also said, “Iran’s relations with Russia and China are built on shared interests,” and he described Iran as having “clear agreements” with Moscow and Beijing.

Regional disputes and stakes
Lavrov and Araghchi discussed regional developments including the security situation in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, and they exchanged views on recent developments in Palestine and Yemen. The two sides emphasized resolving regional disputes and crises peacefully through dialogue and political solutions, and they also stressed strengthening multilateralism and cooperation within international forums.
Baghaei urged that the Yemen issue must be resolved through dialogue, on the basis of a roadmap agreed several years ago, and he said Iran does not consider further military intervention to serve peace. Gulf states urged Moscow to use its influence to press Tehran to halt attacks on its neighbors, and Trump said Russia is doing “very little, if anything, to help” Iran.
