Orbit Dies at 69
Music producer William Orbit, famous for work with Madonna, died at home on July 23 at the age of 69, with the news announced on Friday (Aug. 7).
“On Saturday (Aug. 8), the Queen of Pop took to social media to remember her Ray of Light producer following his death at age 69.”
Billboard says Madonna posted on Saturday (Aug. 8) that “I had an epiphany when I met you and started working with you,” as she remembered her Ray of Light producer.
Rolling Stone likewise reported Madonna wrote, “You pressed a magic button inside of me and I fell into a galaxy of unrealized dreams,” in her social media tribute.
Billboard added that Orbit’s cause of death was not given, and that he first remixed Madonna songs including “Justify My Love” and “Erotica” before collaborating on her 1998 album, Ray of Light.
NME also noted Orbit’s real name was William Wainwright and that his passing was announced on August 7, though no cause of death was shared.
Ray of Light Memories
Madonna’s tribute centered on the creative shift she described while working with Orbit on Ray of Light, including her line that “I realized that music did not have to fit into categories or genres. So we created our own.”
In the same Instagram remembrance, she said “Your music gave me a magic carpet to fly on and I visited many places. Sad and Joyful,” and Rolling Stone tied the post to her video of winning Best Pop Album at the 1999 Grammys.
NME reported that Madonna posted alongside their Grammy acceptance speech for Ray Of Light, and it quoted her saying, “So we created our own. You pressed a magic button inside of me and I fell into a galaxy of unrealized dreams.”
Consequence of Sound framed her message as describing Orbit as “otherworldly” and “singular,” quoting her: “Only you could inspire me to write a song like Drowned World or Swim.”
Billboard added that Orbit stood by her side as they accepted the award for best pop vocal album in 1999, and that Ray of Light peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200.
Legacy and Tributes
Beyond Madonna, Sky News described Orbit as a Grammy winner who produced Madonna’s 1998 album Ray Of Light and worked on Blur’s 1999 album 13 and All Saints chart-topper Pure Shores.

Sky News also quoted DJ Ferry Corsten paying tribute on Instagram, writing: “William was a true visionary,” and it reported other reactions including Mel C writing: “Such an honour to have worked with this great man.”
El Argentino Diario said Orbit’s family and friends announced he died at his home on July 23, 2026, and it quoted their statement: “With deep sadness, the family and friends of William Orbit announce that William died at his home on July 23, 2026.”

The Sun added that Orbit worked with Madonna on Ray Of Light in 1998 and that Madonna captioned her post with “Goodbye William Orbit,” before recalling “I was so lucky to have known you and fallen down the rabbit hole with you.”
