MachineGames and id Software announced Dawn of the Machine during the QuakeCon inaugural stream, presenting it as a new episode for Quake available as a free update for Quake owners.

Dawn of the Machine is built around 19 all-new maps across a cohesive campaign, and it also includes a new soundtrack, hidden secrets, and a dedicated episode hub.

The episode is available as a free add-on to the 2021 remaster, and it brings a new Deathmatch map plus new achievements and several fixes like weapon bobbing effects and reduced memory usage for menus.

In the campaign, Ranger is trapped in a labyrinthine dimension where time folds back onto itself, and the description says players must find the mysterious Máquina de Pesadilla to free themselves.

Platforms and Gameplay Loop

Multiple outlets say the free episode is available across modern platforms, including Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC via Steam and Microsoft Store, Game Pass, and PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

HotHardware adds that console ports of Quake will also be receiving Dawn of the Machine as a free update, and it says even the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One console versions will have access to the 19 new maps.

The campaign’s structure is described as a looping cycle where each visit in the present reshapes the future, and players can collect runes to unlock previously sealed paths.

IGN frames the replayability around the time-loop presentation, saying that if you load up a level again, new paths will unlock, new secrets will be made available, and there will be new upgrades for you to grow stronger.

New Enemies, Weapons, Stakes

The episode adds new enemy and weapon variants, with Nintendo Life listing foes including the Rocket Ogre, Demo Dog, and Blood Shambler, and it pairs them with weapon variants like the lightning-charged Super Axe and the Laser Cannon.

Slayers Club describes the endgame as Ranger confronting The Nightmare Machine, calling it "THE NIGHTMARE IS AN ILLUSION. THE MACHINE IS REAL." and positioning it as the source of the dimension’s madness.

Thurrott quotes id Software’s Parker Wilhelm writing, "Can you believe 2026 marks the 30th anniversary of Quake’s release?" as the lead-in to the announcement of Dawn of the Machine.

For players, the update is positioned as a free 30th-anniversary addition that extends the original Quake experience with a new soundtrack, a new Deathmatch map, and persistent health and ammunition upgrades throughout the looping campaign.
