Alaska distress call dispute
A small 21-foot skiff ran out of fuel off Alaska and radioed the U.S. Coast Guard for help, and a nearby cruise ship, the Wilderness Legacy, towed it into Farragut Bay in southeast Alaska and refueled it.

The Alaska Beacon reported that Mark Zuckerberg’s yacht, Launchpad, was closer to the skiff but did not respond to the maritime assist call.

A Meta spokesperson said the Launchpad crew did not initially hear the call, and that by the time they noticed the Coast Guard’s contact on a different radio channel, the rescue was already underway.
Michael Love, a passenger aboard the Wilderness Legacy, wrote on Bluesky on Aug. 5 that the Coast Guard “radioed Mark Zuckerberg’s yacht — which was closer — and they repeatedly refused to respond.”
Competing accounts and law
Maritime law requires every ship to respond to a distress call unless doing so would put its own vessel at risk, and Ian Ralby said, "Human beings are required to save the lives of other human beings if they can do so at sea."
Zuckerberg’s spokesperson told the Alaska Beacon that Launchpad did not initially hear the call, and that “As the Coast Guard noted, the boat was not in distress, and by the time the crew reviewed the Coast Guard contact on a different radio channel from the one they were operating on, the assist was already underway.”

Love described “near unanimous booing” when the captain announced what had happened, and he said the Wilderness Legacy rescued the stranded vessel after the Coast Guard radioed Launchpad.
The Independent en Español also cited the Alaska Beacon account that the skiff was between Petersburg and Juneau, while the spokesperson said the yacht was on a different radio channel and that Zuckerberg and his family were not aboard.
Business context and AI push
While the Alaska incident drew questions online, Mark Zuckerberg also published a manifesto titled “El futuro es para todos” defending that the biggest risk of AI is centralized control by a single entity or government.
“Meta lanzó Muse Glimmer, una versión de código abierto de su modelo de IA más potente.”
Forbes México said Meta launched Muse Glimmer, a version of open-source code of its most powerful AI model, and that it can generate code, text and images.
Zuckerberg’s manifesto argued that “la noción de que la IA es tan peligrosa que el único camino seguro es una extrema concentración de poder resulta problemática,” and it criticized approaches by rival firms like Anthropic and OpenAI.
The same report said Zuckerberg announced a fund called “The Future is for Everyone Fund” with an initial endowment of 1,000 million dollars for U.S. communities where Meta owns and operates data centers, including support for teachers and first-aid teams.
