Coney Island barbecue attack
A masked gunman opened fire during a Fourth of July family barbecue in Brooklyn’s Coney Island, wounding eight people, including four children, late Saturday night near the Coney Island boardwalk.
“8 shot in New York on Fourth of July Eight people, including four children, were shot on Saturday night in New York City's Coney Island, according to local police”
ABC News reported the shooting occurred in the courtyard of a residence at West 30th and Surf Avenue, where NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said an unknown male dressed in all black and wearing a black ski mask approached the fence line and fired multiple rounds into the courtyard before fleeing on foot.

NBC News said the gunman fled on foot and that authorities were working to identify and apprehend him, while also reporting that a 21-year-old woman remained in critical condition after being shot in the chest.
The NBC account added that the youngest victim was 16 and that the age range was 16 to 26 of the seven victims, described as very young, innocent kids out there.
In the same incident, Tisch said seven of the victims suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds while the 21-year-old victim was hospitalized in critical condition, as police detectives worked to identify the suspect who remained at large.
Officials and investigation
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said at the news conference, “There is no place for this kind of violence in our city. We will not tolerate it. We will fight it with every single tool at our disposal,” as the NYPD sought the masked suspect.
ABC News quoted Tisch describing the preliminary investigation, saying, “The preliminary investigation indicates that a family barbecue was taking place in the courtyard when an unknown male dressed in all black and wearing a black ski mask approached the fence line along Surf Avenue and fired multiple rounds into the courtyard,” before fleeing.

CNN reported that Tisch said there was no indication of any argument or altercation at the barbecue before the shooting, and that authorities were “looking into whether there is a nexus between the two incidents” after a confirmed gang-related homicide last week on the same block.
ABC News said Tisch also noted detectives were investigating whether the shooting is connected to a gang-related homicide that occurred earlier this week on the same block as the shooting on Saturday night.
NBC News added that no one was in custody in the separate Pensacola shooting it described, while the Coney Island case remained under active identification efforts by authorities.
Broader holiday violence
Beyond Brooklyn, NBC News described a Fourth of July shooting in downtown Pensacola, Florida, where a 19-year-old was killed and six others were wounded by gunfire after 1 a.m. Sunday, and Pensacola Police Chief Eric Winstrom said the shooting appeared targeted and that no one was in custody.

NBC News also reported a shooting after 3 a.m. Sunday in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where police responding to the 2200 block of Oliver Street found one woman dead and eight adults treated for non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.
In Gary, Indiana, NBC News said police responded to two separate shootings early Sunday, including one that killed a 10-year-old boy, with the first shooting at 12:34 a.m. in the area of 19th Avenue and Hanley Street and the second at 12:49 a.m. on the 200 block of Chase Street.
In St. Louis, Missouri, NBC News said a 17-year-old boy was killed in a shooting around 12 a.m. Saturday on the 2100 block of Linton Avenue, while two other victims—both 16-year-old boys—were dropped off at a hospital with gunshot wounds.
The NBC account framed the holiday violence as leaving at least six people dead and scores injured across the country, with the Coney Island attack among multiple incidents during Fourth of July celebrations.
