Pezeshkian Meets Putin

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Turkmenistan and said Iran and the US exchanged new proposals aimed at ending the war and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

Pezeshkian told Putin that Iran would not withdraw from negotiations with the US despite the war, saying, “We are in talks, but every time we talk with the US, they attack again. However, we will not walk away from the negotiating table and dialogue,”.

Putin arrived in Turkmenistan for a two-day visit to attend the CIS leaders’ summit and the Caspian Sea environmental summit in the Avaza National Tourist Zone, and he discussed expanding bilateral economic and strategic cooperation with Pezeshkian.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Commonwealth of Independent States leaders’ summit and a Caspian Sea environmental summit, and the leaders reviewed progress in bilateral relations and discussed strengthening cooperation in energy, agriculture, transportation and trade.

Proposals, Mediators, No Track

Pezeshkian said Iran would not walk away from the negotiating table, adding that proposals were exchanged from both sides and that Iran had made its own revisions.

Pezeshkian said, “Proposals were exchanged, both from our side and from the Americans, and we have made our own revisions to them. Once finalised, we intend to sit down with the relevant intermediaries to consolidate and conclude the matter,”.

WANA News Agency said the diplomatic process remains active but has not developed into a formal negotiating track, and it said no direct talks are currently taking place between Iran and the United States.

WANA News Agency said communication continues through intermediaries and that the exchange of proposals represents the main substantive development, while also stating that the exchange does not by itself mean the two sides have reached an understanding or are close to an agreement.

What Is at Stake

Pezeshkian said Iran’s goal is to end the conflict and ensure the rights of the Iranian nation are respected within the framework of international law, while warning that if the US insists on unilateralism, “this will not be feasible.” Putin said the key issue in the region is resolving the current crisis, which he said the Islamic Republic of Iran played no role in instigating, and he said Iran has put forward new proposals to bring the conflict to a close.

WANA News Agency said the current process is conditional on acceptance of Iran’s proposed arrangements concerning the Strait of Hormuz, and it said the issue of Hormuz is directly linked to any potential progress in the talks. WANA News Agency also said the chances of reaching an agreement remain very limited and that Iran is not prepared to retreat from its stated positions, meaning any potential agreement would have to take Tehran’s conditions into account.
