Trenton cookout shooting
Gunfire erupted at a gathering that may have been a cookout in Trenton, New Jersey, around 12:25 a.m. Sunday on the 100 block of Locust Street, leaving two people dead and eight others hospitalized, according to Captain David Ordille of the Trenton Police Department.

NBC10 Philadelphia reported that investigators found 10 confirmed victims suffering from gunshot wounds and that the shooting happened after "multiple suspects walked up to the party and began to fire into the crowd."
The Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office said the two who died were a 33-year-old woman and a 42-year-old man, while the other victims ranged in age from 23 to 43 and were treated at Capital Health Regional Medical Center.
The Trentonian said the scene encompassed the entire 100 block of Locust Street and that "more than 50 spent shell casings were located," with multiple vehicles struck by gunfire.
In the immediate aftermath, Trenton Mayor W. Reed Gusciora said one of the people killed had been working to turn his life around after returning home from incarceration and had recently been recognized for his commitment to reentry and positive change, as Fox News also quoted him saying.
Conflicting totals, ongoing probe
While Fox News said three people died and 18 others were wounded in two mass shootings less than 15 minutes apart, the Trenton reporting in the New Jersey capital focused on two deaths and a hospitalization count that varied by outlet.
NBC10 Philadelphia said two people were killed and eight have been hospitalized after 10 people were shot, while the Trentonian corrected earlier reporting and said the total number of gunshot victims is ten, not 11, after officials cited confusion involving an injured person not hit by gunfire.
The Trentonian quoted the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office saying, "Multiple suspects walked up to the party and began to fire into the crowd," and it said the investigation was led by the Mercer County Homicide Task Force.
Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora told residents to come forward with information, saying, "If you know something, say something. If you have video, preserve it."
New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill said she had been briefed on the shooting and that her Attorney General remains in close contact with officials on the ground, as Fox News reported in a post on X.
Public-safety measures ahead
As police continued to investigate the Trenton shooting, officials said the incident involved a large, unauthorized adult gathering on a residential street that created serious public-safety concerns for attendees, neighbors, police, and first responders.

The Trentonian reported that Gusciora said the City of Trenton would take additional proactive measures to prevent unauthorized gatherings of this size from taking over residential streets, and it said the city’s community street teams would canvass the neighborhood to listen, gather information, and help connect residents with resources.
In the immediate investigation, the Trentonian said HTF detectives were reviewing surveillance footage and attempting to locate helpful witnesses, and it said the scene was processed by Trenton Police Department’s Crime Scene Unit with officers from the Ewing Police Department responding to assist with crowd control.
The stakes for the community were underscored by the mayor’s message that resilience cannot mean simply enduring tragedy after tragedy, and he said it must mean learning from what happened and doing everything within the city’s power to prevent the next one, as the Trentonian reported.
