Netanyahu seeks regime change

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said overthrowing Iran’s government remains Israel’s “primary objective,” as he faced declining support in the polls before national elections next week.

“‘There is only one way to remove this threat once and for all: overthrowing the regime in Iran.”
New York Post

Netanyahu told an Israel Defense Forces officer graduation ceremony that “There is only one way to remove this threat once and for all: overthrowing the regime in Iran,” and he framed it as a directive to the IDF, Mossad, and security agencies.

Netanyahu also said he had issued a directive stating that “the only acceptable solution is the overthrow of the fanatical regime in Iran,” while he said he would inform U.S. President Donald Trump of what Israel intends to do.

Netanyahu linked his push to Iranian leadership to a claim that Mojtaba Khamenei “decided to follow in his father’s footsteps,” after Ali Khamenei was killed in an Israeli strike on Feb. 28.

Analysts quoted by Al Jazeera said Israel has the ability to inflict serious damage on Iran, but they argued it lacks a clear strategy for translating military gains into overthrowing Iran’s government.

Warnings and uncertainty

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned that “Iran will burn” if the Islamic Republic launches an attack on the Jewish state, and he said Israel and its proxies were seeking to carry out terror attacks to influence the outcome of the Oct. 27 Knesset elections.

Katz told the graduation ceremony that “Our message to the Iranian regime is clear,” and he said Israel was prepared to thwart attempts and “ready to strike you with full force.”

Al Jazeera reported that US backing for another offensive against Iran remained uncertain, with experts questioning Washington’s appetite for renewed fighting.

Al Jazeera also quoted Urban Coningham of the Royal United Services Institute saying Israel could “again establish air superiority and strike Iranian targets,” while he argued that airpower alone would not achieve regime change.

Caglar Kurc, an assistant professor at Abdullah Gul University in Kayseri, Turkiye, told Al Jazeera that bombing could weaken Iran’s military but not necessarily eliminate its ability to fight back, because “Well-hidden systems would survive.”

What comes next

Netanyahu said he had directed the Israel Defense Forces, Mossad and other security branches to pursue the overthrow of the Iranian regime, calling it the only way to eliminate the nuclear threat from Tehran. Netanyahu told an IDF officer course graduation ceremony that “As long as they are here, as long as they strive to acquire horrific weapons, the State of Israel faces an existential threat,” and he said “our duty” was to save the nation. Al Jazeera reported that analysts said a renewed offensive would mean confronting a state that has already survived two rounds of attacks and retains the means to retaliate, including against Israel and its Gulf neighbours hosting US military assets.

Al Jazeera also said Israel can no longer assume that covert methods used in earlier attacks would prove equally effective again, and it quoted Coningham describing intelligence assets as “use and burn.” The Jerusalem Post said Netanyahu told journalists that “The regime must fall, and I will bring it down,” and it quoted him linking the objective to his plan and directive to security agencies.
