The Guardian reported that Count Binface said, “I didn’t know old Farage was going to self detonate … did I?” as the parody candidate’s profile surged after Farage’s resignation.

The BBC described the political gambit as leaving Farage to run all but unopposed, with all the major political parties saying they will not field candidates against him.

The Guardian also said the prime minister, Keir Starmer, addressed Binface’s candidacy on the sidelines of the Nato summit, adding, “I think it’s actually against Labour party rules to endorse another [candidate].”

Boycotts and betting

The Independent reported that Farage’s opponents “aren’t playing ball,” leaving him to face only Count Binface and other potential novelty entrants after major parties refused to stand.

The London Evening Standard said Oddschecker put Binface at 5-1 of winning while Farage remained clear favourite on 1-8, framing the contest as a potential “triple embarrassment” for Farage.

Polling expert and Tory peer Lord Hayward told the Evening Standard, “It could be a triple embarrassment,” linking it to turnout because Farage has to show “a large number of Clacton voters still support him.”

The Guardian added that Farage sought to portray the byelection as a “people versus the establishment” contest, prompting Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch to describe Binface as the “people’s candidate.”

Probe and possible fallout

The Independent said Parliament’s standards watchdog is investigating a potentially rule-breaking donation of 5 million pounds ($6.7 million) from Christopher Harborne, and noted that newly elected lawmakers must declare gifts worth more than 300 pounds ($400).

The Telegraph reported that if the standards committee rule against Farage, a second by-election could be triggered, and it also described a scenario in which a recall petition signed by 10 per cent of constituents in Clacton could force another vote.

The Independent warned that if the investigation continues and creates a scenario requiring a second special election, Farage’s gambit could backfire further, even as he insisted he has “done nothing wrong” and is the victim of “constant demonization” by the media.
