Gas summit in Moscow

Russian President Vladimir Putin opened the eighth summit of the heads of state and government of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum in Moscow, saying the role of gas as a basis for global energy will be strengthened across various sectors. Putin stressed that Russia is working to strengthen its sovereignty in the gas sector and is making decisions on new areas, emphasizing the importance of coordinating efforts among producing countries. Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani affirmed that his country will continue contributing to reinforcing global energy security during the summit.

The Gas Exporting Countries Forum Secretary-General Philippe Rivaleau said geopolitical tensions and unilateral restrictions necessitate enhanced international cooperation to ensure supply stability, warning that disruptions in gas transit through the Strait of Hormuz extend to the global economy. Rivaleau said natural gas can help reduce air pollution and emissions when used as a substitute for coal, while meeting future demand requires long-term investments in production, liquefaction, storage, transportation, distribution networks and power plants.

Iran, Qatar, and Hormuz

President Masoud Pezeshkian met Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on Tuesday on the sidelines of the eighth summit of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum in Moscow, with the two discussing ways to develop bilateral relations and strengthen energy cooperation. The Times of Israel reported that the emir’s office said the leaders discussed the Middle East war and the blockaded Strait of Hormuz during the Moscow meeting. Qatari foreign ministry official Ibrahim Al-Hashmi said the region needed a new security framework to prevent further violence, and he said, "The ball is now in Iran’s court to commit to these principles and demonstrate good faith."

The Iranian army said an oil tanker hit mines and caught fire while attempting to cross the Strait of Hormuz via a route not authorized by Tehran, and the army added, "A few hours ago, an oil tanker in breach of regulations" struck naval mines. The Times of Israel said Iran claims control over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy conduit, and has targeted vessels that attempt to cross without its authorization since the outbreak of the Middle East war on February 28.
