Kyiv hit by 41 missiles

Russia launched one of its largest ballistic missile barrages at Kyiv, killing at least one person and wounding 16 others, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said as the attack involved 41 missiles and started fires across several districts.

Russia has unleashed one of its largest ballistic missile barrages at Kyiv since the start of the war, killing at least one person and wounding 16 others, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said

Al JazeeraAl Jazeera

The Ukrainian air force said the barrage began overnight into Sunday and that it shot down almost half of the 41 ballistic missiles while also intercepting 108 of the 125 drones, with the acting foreign minister Andrii Sybiha calling it the largest since the war began in February 2022.

In the north-eastern city of Kharkiv, BBC reported four people were killed, while Al Jazeera said at least four people were killed when Russia struck a postal depot in Ukraine’s second-largest city, with local media saying the facility was hit three times.

The BBC also reported an elderly woman died in Kyiv, while Al Jazeera said one person died following an attack in Zaporizhia and two people were killed during Russian shelling in the Donetsk region.

Sybiha said the missile barrage targeting Kyiv was “a brutal terrorist attack on the Ukrainian capital” that demanded a firm response, as Prime Minister Sergii Koretskyi said nearly 600 rescue workers, medics, police officers and other emergency personnel were responding to the aftermath.

Competing death tolls

Zelenskyy framed the raid on Kyiv as “one of the most massive ballistic attacks” since Russia launched a full-scale invasion in 2022, while the BBC said air defenses in the capital shot down 18 out of 41 missiles and intercepted 108 drones.

Al Jazeera put the death toll higher, saying “At least 41 workers burned to death” in a different context, but for Kyiv it reported that Russia’s strikes sparked fires across Kyiv and that rescue workers pulled four people from a burning private home in the Sviatoshynskyi district.

In the Kyiv region, the BBC reported that Zelensky said in the past week Russia had “used about 1,450 strike drones, more than 1,640 guided bombs and 99 missiles of various types against Ukraine,” while Al Jazeera said the latest bombardment highlighted mounting challenges facing Ukraine amid a shortage of Patriot air defence missiles.

CNN described the barrage as intense and concentrated in a two-hour spell overnight, quoting Zelenskyy that “The enemy launched more than 40 missiles of various types – most of them against the capital – and 120 attack drones,” and it said Ukraine’s air force reported 18 missiles and 108 unmanned aerial vehicles were shot down or neutralized.

Sybiha urged “appropriate and strong responses” on X, while Zelenskyy reiterated “Protection against ballistic missiles is our constant and top priority right now,” as the attack’s scale fed into Ukraine’s push for more interceptors.

Patriot shortages and retaliation

The BBC said Russia had not commented on a separate late-Sunday report that a Turkish-owned civilian cargo ship with grain was hit by Russian missiles in the Black Sea, while it also reported Ukraine said it had hit three Russian oil tankers in the Black Sea and three oil depots in the southern Stavropol region.

Al Jazeera reported that Ukraine said its forces struck two Russian oil tankers in the Black Sea, continuing its strategy of trying to starve the Russian-occupied peninsula Crimea of fuel and supplies by targeting shipping, while it also said the United States President Donald Trump had said he was prepared to grant Ukraine licences to produce Patriot interceptor missiles domestically.

CNN added that the Russian Defense Ministry confirmed what it called a “massive strike” against “defense industry facilities and logistics centers in the city of Kyiv,” and it said 23 missiles and 10 drones had hit 20 locations.

In the wake of the attack, Ukraine’s political and military pressures were also in view, with Al Jazeera describing domestic tensions after Zelenskyy removed his defence minister as part of a cabinet reshuffle, and with the BBC reporting Zelensky’s statement that “Protection against ballistic missiles is our constant and top priority right now” as interceptors remained a daily need.
